County Commissioners Inspect Roads in Conservancy and Flood Districts
Athens County commissioners conducted two road inspection tours after adopting measures. They viewed roads to be vacated near a water supply lake in the Margaret Creek Conservancy District near Albany, then surveyed roads in Glouster with County Engineer Harold Hitchens. Two roads remain closed due to slips from May rains, County Road 109 in Rome Two and County Road 95 in Trimble Two. Hitchens proposed a center-line survey on County Roads 53 and 109, with Road 109 needing a relocation at one point. Road 53 is open to one way traffic. A house slid across Road 95 during heavy May rains. The board approved investing $300,000 of real estate funds in short-term U.S. Treasury notes, with interest to county general fund until distribution to subdivisions. The commissioners called for bids on hospitalization insurance for county garage employees, and to buy a new automobile for the county engineer, bids due July 8. Budget discussions covered next year’s plans, with office requests due to the budget commission by July 20. budget clerk Mrs Helen Robinette filed 12 requests for the commissioners office, jail, courthouse, and others including Sheriff Harold Shields, Coroner Dr. Robert Butts, and Recorder Luta Wright.

Jury Fails To Reach Verdict In Ohio Narcotics Trial
A Common Pleas Court jury in Athens failed to reach a verdict after nearly two hours of deliberation in the narcotics case of Wayne Allan Davis, 27, of Cleveland. The 9 to 3 vote for acquittal prompted a hung jury and a scheduled retrial, with Davis denying selling or giving narcotics to Richard all. The case, part of a group indicted in May, faces possible dismissal on double jeopardy grounds if retried.
