Samuel Hill and Addison Croson of Sharpsburg Athens County were placed on probation by Federal Judge Mell G Underwood after pleading guilty to liquor violation charges. Each received a suspended sentence of one year and one day and a $500 fine.
A Washington DC police officer resigns, returns badge and gun and announces a bid for the US presidency. The piece wryly notes a dark horse candidate and suggests campaigning via The Messenger classifieds. An odd ad line mentions a Remington typewriter and a sale price.
In Columbus a Knights of St. John convention business session led to an evening banquet where Gen. Henry A. Leusch of Cleveland, supreme president, was slated as principal speaker. Also reported are bread price cuts at two Columbus bakeries, WPA employment figures for Ohio, and a fatal bicycle accident involving 15 year old golf caddy Albert Lombardi struck by a car driven by J M Stewart near Arlington Golf Course.
In Weirton West Virginia a blaze destroyed the home of Thomas Mc Gavitt killing two boys Harry McGavitt 15 and Michael 9 and injuring eight others. The injured include McGavitts wife and children William 12 Mary 11 Dorothy 4 Mrs R L Cummins and her daughters Ola 15 and Martha 13.
Four nominees for department commander were named at the Ohio encampment of the United Spanish War Veterans. Walter K. Patterson of Cleveland was to be succeeded by Harry L. Welge of Cincinnati Col. John A. Harley of Lima A B Critchfield of Shreve and G R Strobel of Toledo. Frank Lowry of Athena was nominated for senior vice president along with Maurice Scott of Bloomdale and Dr Z B Atwell of Canton.
At the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia the keynote by Alben W. Barkley targeted Gov. Alf Landon and the Liberty League, with Hoover cited as a Republican foil. Barkley’s planned 11,000 words were cut by bosses by about 3,000, leaving a sharper address focused on New Deal themes.
A group of state engineers has recommended to Governor Davey's efficiency committee that construction of a new building at the State Fair Grounds be approved to house the Departments of Highways and Agriculture. The proposal was learned today in Columbus.
Philadelphia reporters describe chaotic Democratic convention scenes as Senator Alben W. Barkley assaults GOP foes, praising Roosevelt and New Deal achievements. In Columbus two Cleveland youths see diverging fates after Donald Eberle, 30, is executed for the Wesosky murder. While relatives conduct last rites, Joseph Pleyer gains a stay of execution as his appeal proceeds in the Ohio Supreme Court. Governor Davey earlier refused clemency for both.

Lucas a Texas bank robber was in solitary confinement at Alcatraz today for attempting to kill Scarface Al Capone with scissors stolen from the prison barber shop Capone was only slightly wounded and knocked Lucas to the floor before guards intervened Capone had been transferred from Atlanta to finish a tax fraud sentence and the attacks were said to arise from claims Capone had informed on fellow inmates
In Columbus Ohio Clayton J Clawson known as Lawson from Toledo threatened a Cleveland courtroom during a robbery trial by waving a bottle he claimed held nitro glycerin. The bottle was later found to contain ammonia after a detective shot it from his hand.
Mar ian Bush Snyder reports a Space Sight Seeing Trip at Ohio University where lecturer Prof. Raroy Sibley guided an audience through Mars, the sun, Halley s comet, and the Milky Way using telescope imagery from Mount Wilson Yerkes Lick Lowell and Harvard observatories. The talk explained Moon craters Mars vegetation and the vast scale of the universe with measurements in light years and miles.

Ohio crops valued at hundreds of thousands of dollars face doom without rain to end the June drought. A county survey shows yields cut by one half to one third, with particularly bad conditions in Southeastern Ohio including Marietta Athens and Gallipolis. Wheat and hay report about one quarter normal, while central Ohio fares better and northern Ohio is in need. Corn stands still in the north. veal calves in Cleveland and Pittsburgh suffer sunburn but not ill effects. Scattered showers offer slight relief.
Locust Valley Long Island police report thieves stole cash and jewels valued at more than 400000 from the Coe residence at Upper Brookville during the night. Inspector Harold R. King said the break in occurred between 230 and 730 am with the thief entering via a porch roof after climbing a concrete column. The Coe estate Planting Fields is among Long Island's largest.
In New York William Z. Foster the three time presidential candidate of the Communist party opened the party's national convention with a call for a mighty people's front against reaction fascism and war. Seven hundred delegates attended.
Five year old girl died in a Dayton hospital from burns received while alone at home on a hot plate. The child was left unsupervised by guardians, with no other injuries reported.
A train on the Pennsylvania Railroad known as the American struck and killed 12 year old Robert Green at Alpha, then hit an automobile in Xenia without injuries. The incidents happened late Tuesday on the New York to St Louis route.

A 50 year old worker, B Stanley Gray, was killed Tuesday while repairing a high tension line two miles north of Coshocton Ohio. The accident occurred near the town as utility crews attended the scene and investigators reviewed the case for cause.
