In Columbus, FEPC legislation failed 17 to 13 after a three hour debate ending a six hour session. Democrats and Republicans allied to defeat a compulsory FEPC bill amid procedural clashes and heated exchanges.
The will of William A. Julian former U S treasurer was admitted to probate in Cincinnati in its original form. A prior codicil invalidated by Judge Chase M Davies left Julian giving the Seventh Day Adventist Church five twentieths of his fortune. Julian died in a car accident on May 29.
Mrs. Helen Richards Guthrie Miller aged 88 dies in Columbia after a life as a national suffrage and welfare advocate. Widowed from Dr. Walter McNab Miller former University of Missouri Medical School staff member. Born in Zanesville Ohio.
Lancaster Police Chief Sam D Hussler was cleared by a five member citizens investiga ting committee which found insufficient evidence to suspend him Mayor Fred Von Stein said he would not suspend or remove Hussler The chief faced a charge of extortion and a petition signed by 12 officers alleging incompetency neglect of duty immorality and abuse of discretion The petitioners later withdrew eight signatures saying the issue had become too personal The Lancaster Civil Service Commission began hearings Tuesday on suspensions affecting several officers
Rep. Cel ler ordered a full scale inquiry by a Civil Rights subcommittee into hooded flogging in Alabama. The Birmingham area beatings were blamed on white sheeted assailants as Rep Byrne will direct the probe and witnesses will be subpoenaed. A companion bill to unmask hooded organizations in Alabama was approved by the House Judiciary Committee after Klan leaders urged defeat.
John A. Brady aged 23, a security officer at the European Cooperation Administration headquarters in Paris, was shot and killed last night. Police say it was an accident. Brady was struck by a bullet from a pistol held by Colin H. Mechlin of Columbus, Ohio, also a security officer. The two friends reportedly believed the gun was unloaded.
Barney Kenneth Davis Jr., 24, of Cleveland, is scheduled to die in the Ohio Penitentiary electric chair tonight for the burglary slaying of Norman Carl Reker, Cleveland Heights policeman, Feb. 20, 1948. Davis was convicted of first degree murder last summer. The Ohio Supreme Court declined to review the case May 18.
Cincinnati Kroger said a price reduction of 12 to 13 cents per pound on most retail lamb will take effect tomorrow. The move aligns with lower market costs and aims to boost fresh meat sales in its supermarkets.
The House Appropriations Committee recommended an extra 33 million dollars for state grants to administer job finding and jobless payment programs. In Steubenville a 44 year old steel worker Andrew Stanko shot his wife Betty Stanko in bed early today then wounded himself in the head. Police say he was in fair condition at Ohio Valley Hospital. a first degree murder charge was expected. Betty's daughter heard the gunfire and saw her father at the bed. The couple's son Andrew Stanko Jr. is a student at Ohio University in Athens.
Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co will begin wage discussions for about 30,000 workers across 10 plants on August 1. The union seeks 25 cent hourly increases and company financed pens ions of about 100 dollars monthly.

Captain Ed Hatch of Memphis steered the stricken craft to a field avoiding high tension wires and a highway, with a wing damaged and an engine ablaze. Thirty eight were injured. 18 released. Four Ohioans among the injured include Mrs H H Gibson Akron and her children Diane and Richard and Mrs Carl Ludlow Mount Carmel.
Federal conciliators in Cincinnati oversee resumed talks on a six week Selby Shoe Co strike in Portsmouth. About 2400 workers began the walkout May 16 over wage terms and an escalator clause tied to the cost of living. observers from St. Louis New York and Cincinnati attend as 250000 indirect workers may be affected by any agreement.
Clay Patterson, 27, of Ironton admitted killing his wife Elizabeth 21 in a Columbus tavern on January 14. He described a taunting remark by his wife and asked to be excused from repeating it. Patterson’s parents testified as character witnesses. Final arguments expected today as jury deliberation nears.
Polish born Mrs Gerhart Eisler was deported to Europe on Wednesday after immigration authorities denied voluntary departure. She had been out on bail for overstaying a visitor permit and was arrested at Ellis Island May 13. Her husband, described as a top American communist, jumped $23,500 bail and escaped on the liner Batory and is now in the Russian zone in Germany.
A four engined KLM airliner crashed into the sea near Bari Italy killing an estimated 35 people with 21 bodies recovered. The flight was en route from Batavia to Amsterdam and aboard were Americans Dutch and Turks.
Judith Coplon grew emotional under cross examination as she defended her morals and loyalty in the spy trial. She denied improper conduct in all-night meetings with N P Shapiro and claimed a frame-up involving Valentine A. Gubitchev and other officials.
Defense counsel gave up efforts to free John H. Haley 19 after the U S Supreme Court refused to hear the case again. Haley was convicted of first degree murder in the 1945 robbery slaying of William Karam confectioner of Canton. Alfred Parks 20 and Willie Lowder 21 are serving life sentences in Ohio Penitentiary in the same case.
Two Ironton men and city firemen Sherman Rutledge twenty four and Herbert Rye twenty three were freed on three thousand dollars bond after being charged with assault with intent to kill in the beating of Albert Long and his son Joseph as they left their cafe early Tuesday morning.
Kenneth Barnes, 25, of Ironton, died from a skull fracture after he fell from a moving car last Sunday. Police reported the incident occurred in Ironton and is being investigated as an auto fatality.
