American infantry fought house to house with German defenders to seize Cherbourg as Allied forces push on the peninsula. Supreme headquarters reported no knowledge of a separate report and warned of rapid moving objectives threatening to split Nazi forces into three segments.
U S carrier planes of the Fifth Fleet sank one Japanese aircraft carrier and three tankers Monday in a follow up to Sunday’s air battle off the Marianas.
