Ohio Governor George White signals support for repealing the Eighteenth Amendment and legalizing beer by Congress noting a referendum should be via congressional action. He argues beer can be made non intoxicating and favors immediate relief, citing Webb Kenyon and Reed amendments to protect dry states.
The U.R. claimed the American proposal for worldwide armament cuts is unnecessary and argues a 10 percent U.S. budget reduction would suffice across land sea and air. It asserts the United States would reserve the right to apply the savings where needed and rejects any war revision. A world disarmament conference is said to have progressed due to the French proposal.
Washington June 22 The Senate failed to pass the 2 billion unemployment relief bill and refused a night session delaying adjournment beyond the Democratic National Convention. Leader Robinson planned a ten minute limit on debate after 3 p m to speed action as major decisions on public works bonds and Reconstruction Finance funds remained unresolved.
Wendell Reno a 23 year old deputy game warden of Highland County pleaded guilty to manslaughter and was sentenced to one to 20 years in prison by Judge N Craig McBride. Reno killed Carson Payton a 22 year old fisherman near Centerfield last May 4 while stopping him and his brothers for questioning at Lee s Creek. He said he fired to frighten the youth whom he thought was escaping. Payton s brothers denied he was running away.
The Bonus Army will hold a national convention next week with about 500 delegates to form a permanent organization and end policy bickering. Leaders split on forming a third party while Congress will act on the $2.4 billion bonus when it reconvenes next December. Police Chief Glasford is arranging railroad transportation to move veterans home.

Lorain Ohio resident Frank Smathers opened fire with a doublebarreled shotgun in a backyard cherry theft. One suspect John Wesneski died from heart shots and four others were wounded, with three not seriously hurt. Smathers was detained as police prepared possible manslaughter charges.

Albany June 22 Governor Roosevelt asked Mayor James J. Walker to answer charges raised by Samuel Seabury attorney for the Hofstadter New York City Investigating Committee. Seabury’s summary claimed Walker’s testimony and evidence on his administration show he is unfit for office. He also charged Walker’s stock ownership in a firm selling street light fixtures to the city could disqualify him.
Rumors circulated in Chicago that the Tammany delegation may name Mayor Walker of New York to the Democratic National Convention resolutions committee. If true, the move would be seen as Tammany defying Roosevelt by withholding support for him.
