In Houston on June 22, dry advocates led by anti Smith factions push prohibition as the major issue. Governor Smith’s NY remarks spark debate, with drys rallying women at prayer and Smith allies urging a clear stance before the convention. Planks on farm relief corruption and law enforcement form the party platform.
A Washington Information Bureau note offers a 6 by 9 inch half tone portrait of the Republican presidential nominee. The ad requests ten cents for handling and postage and asks readers to enclose the payment with a coupon. Frederic J. Haskin signs as Director.
Tokyo June 22 United Press reports that about five to six thousand U.S. Marines and soldiers in Tientsin and Shanghai may be withdrawn within months. Rear Admiral Mark L. Bristol, head of the American Asiatic Fleet, favors sending forces home and keeping clear of the China crisis, with ships remaining in Chinese waters.
Omer G. Patterson, 50, bookkeeper for Citizens State Bank Noblesville, was found dying in a hotel after a reported 147000 shortage. State examiner Thomas Barr closed the bank, Patterson signed a confession before losing consciousness, and died soon after.
Herbert Hoover plans to depart Washington early in July for Palo Alto California to prepare and deliver his July speech accepting the Republican nomination. He will remain in his cabinet post until after the notification ceremonies and hopes to keep it until March after a summer talk with President Coolidge.
In a battle near La Puerta in Guadalajara territory twenty two rebels and ten federal soldiers were killed after an eight hour fight. Officials say two priests acted as co leaders with bandit Rodolfo Loza on the rebel side.
Columbus Ohio June 22 Prohibition Commissioner B F Mc Donald was told by Governor Donahey to investigate Felix Pesce of Canton who was ordered by Ohio penitentiary to serve two to five years for illegal liquor manufacture.
John Coolidge, son of the president, is in love with Florence Trumbull of Connecticut and plans to seek a job first. He remains reticent about engagement or long term plans, saying he may join his father in Wisconsin for advice once jobs are secured. He has graduated from Amherst and faces public curiosity about his romantic life and career path.
Joe B. Davis 43, well known coal operator, farmer and horseman, died at his Kimberly home after heart trouble. He owned Highland Coal Company, bred prize horses, and hosted fair associations. Survived by two wives, two children, his mother, and a sister. funeral Sunday at 2 p.m. at his residence with burial in Union Street Cemetery Athens.
Financial circles in Buffalo report the Studebaker corporation and the Pierce Arrow Motor Car company close to consummating a merger. The consolidation would create a fourth major auto firm with about 160 million dollars in assets, joining General Motors Ford and Chrysler-Dodge.
Nine former directors of the Cities Mortgage company were indicted by Franklin County grand jurors on embezzlement charges tied to the firm’s collapse. Indicted individuals include Harvey C. Smith and C. V. Trott among eight others. a separate indictment accuses three of embezzling 285000 dollars linked to company operations. The group faces two counts alleging illegal dividends declared on July 4 and October 14, 1927.
Nelsonville reports Valley mines at Kimberly resume work at units 2 and 6 with 35 men, Lick Run mine with 36, and 22 pickets at Ohio Collieries Nos. 255 and 281. A minor disturbance occurred at Dorr Run near Long Hollow. Floodwood saw a small clash as workers gathered. High water damaged rail sidings at 10X mine Orbiston delaying loading.
Robert Lunsford, 36, believed drowned in flood waters Wednesday night near Glouster. He was found yesterday in an out building after friends feared a drowning when he failed to return home. A passerby report of cries for help prompted searches that located him.
Wilmont LeRoy Wagner, 23, a Canadian farmhand, was executed at Sing Sing last night for the murder of two New York state troopers. He died in the electric chair after being convicted in Ossining.
New York, June 22. Governor Alfred E. Smith reiterates support for amending the dry law and says he will push for changes if elected president. Asked at a daily press conference about Norman E. Mack’s anti prohibition remarks, Smith replied he has not wavered. Mack, NY Democratic national committeeman, issued a Houston statement praising Smith as favoring liberty and temperance while opposing prohibition.
U S Senator George Moses said Herbert Hoover would win about 24 percent of Democratic women voters for every Republican who backs Alfred Smith. Moses, after meeting Hoover, warned of a Democratic misstep and predicted Smith’s chances in New York would improve but even out in odds.
In Washington DC three men, Nicholas Eagles Samuel Moreno and John Proctor, faced the electric chair for the murder of Policeman Leo Busch. Eagles sang a Jewish lament before execution Moreno kissed a cross and Proctor was carried in unconscious on a stretcher.
Floods eased in the Hocking river valley allowing highways to reopen and mail and bus service to resume. Athens and Glouster areas saw receding waters though lowlands remained flooded, with Crops and gardens reporting thousands of dollars in losses.
In Hocking County Ohio heavy rains washed out bridges and culverts and flooded streets and homes. Roads such as the Logan Lancaster highway were closed north of Rockbridge, and the New Straitsville pike flooded in four spots. Water damaged crops and saturated river bottoms around Logan. Emergency crews reported downed wires as Western Union and local telephone lines failed.
Chauncey residents Richard Dowler and George Fluhart lost two homes to flooding on Main Street west of the railroad. Water stood two feet deep on the highway. state highway trucks towed through the water and traffic resumed around pa cey as the water receded. Buses were running on schedule again this morning.
GLOUSTER June 22 Shortly before 7 this morning it was reported the Derthick mine 10 still had the same number of men at work as Wednesday and was idle due to flood conditions between the city and Derthick. The labor train could reach only to the Yatimine 24 below Jacksonville because part of the track on the Modoc line was washed out. Forty rode the train from this city with no reports from Trimble and Jacksonville available.
Willie MacFarlane the Scottish golfer who won the 1925 national open after playoffs with Bobby Jones took the lead in the current championship at Olympia Fields with 147. He shot 38 outward and 36 back today, building on 63 yesterday as heavy course conditions limited scoring.
Ohio Transit Co operating lines from Lancaster asks the state utilities commission for a rehearing of its order to withdraw two 11 passenger buses from the Lancaster Athens route. The company says the commission erred and public need justifies keeping the buses. Four Chinese convicted of a murder were hanged at Florence State penitentiary at dawn today.
