Sox Pitcher Cy Acosta Breaks Designated Hitter Barrier
Cy Acosta became the first pitcher in the American League to hit for himself in the Designated Hitter era during the Chicago White Sox 8-3 win over the California Angels. Manager Chuck Tanner noted he did not realize Acosta was making history as Pat Kelly homered in a six-run inning that sealed Chicago's victory and ended a five-game skid. Cincinnati Indians beat Detroit 7-6 while other AL games featured New York, Boston, and Texas winning with Stottlemyre and Lyle key in relief and saving roles.
