Silent heart disease grows among young men says Navy doctor
Lt Cmdr Carl Pepine reports that silent coronary disease may affect young American men. In a study of 200 Navy volunteers, 19 of 40 with risk factors showed significant artery obstruction. Screening misses early warning signs, and many deaths come from sudden heart attacks. A Marine case and arteriogram findings illustrate the issue. The report suggests 20 percent of men ages 26 to 40 with high fat levels may have disease without symptoms.
