Middleport Leader John Downing Dies at 86
John Black Downing, 86, prominent Middleport business and civic leader, died Tuesday at Meigs General Hospital after weeks as a patient. He served as president of Meigs Water Co since 1921 and chaired Citizens National Bank board. He helped bring natural gas to Gallpolis, Middleport and Pomeroy. his firm later passed to Richardson Oil and Gas and then Ohio Fuel Gas. He is survived by son Rodney and daughter Marie Singleton, plus grandchildren and great grandchildren.
