The administration backed strip mine regulation bill nears its final vote as the Senate prepares to act and the House has already passed it. Gov Lausche calls older laws unenforceable and says the new measure should have teeth while coal operators and conservationists see it as workable.
Approximately 100 electricians walked off the job last Friday at the Philip Sporn power plant project at Graham Station after three workers were discharged. D W Parsons, supervising engineer, said efforts were under way to contact union officials in Cincinnati.
Hansford L. Hawkins a 57 year old foundry worker was indicted by the grand jury on first degree murder for the June 9 shooting of Paul E. Young of Seaman. The case centers on the Hillsboro indictment and identifies Hawkins as the alleged shooter.
In Moravia near Austria and Hungary, Communist authorities arrest numerous churchmen and lay leaders amid a broader clash with the Separatist Catholic Action group. Archbishop Matocha and Archbishop Beran face police watch as the Vatican denounces the movement and the Holy Office declares excommunication for members and promoters.
Fred Miller former Kiwanis Club president and restaurant owner was shot in the abdomen during a quarrel with a patron early today. He is in critical condition with 22 perforations to his intestines from a .25 caliber pistol. James Ayres 36 of Youngstown was arrested soon after the shooting.
Milton Babich, 19, was convicted of first degree murder in the death of Patricia Birmingham, 16. The jury verdict followed his admission that he killed her after showing a gun to frighten her from revealing Kathleen’s pregnancy. He was sentenced to life with possible parole after 11 years and three months.
Luther Gaskins, a ward at Athens County Children's Home, died after falling under the wheels of a backing truck on the home grounds. Leonard Mitchell, the home vehicle driver, was identified. the injury occurred as the boy rode on the truck bed and jumped. He died en route to Sheltering Arms Hospital. his mother Laura Gaskins, from Nelsonville, worked in a local restaurant.
The 50-year-old Frank Everett of Athens Route 3 was found dead in the No. 211 mine reservoir near Poston. Coroner Dr. John Elias ruled drowning from an apparent self harm incident after Everett disappeared Saturday night. He had $105 on him. funeral set for Thursday at McDougal Church.
Paris reports the four foreign ministers ended four weeks of talks with a six point principles statement guiding German negotiations and a plan to draft an Austrian independence treaty by Sept 1. They pledged future meetings in New York and agreed to maintain contact while easing East West trade and movement.
William Franklin Hammond aged 24 of Wooster was killed at the Ike Morris farm near Kingston Pickaway County when a concrete slab from a silo fell and fractured his skull. He worked for the Ohio Silo Co of Wooster.
In Cleveland a broad lakefront hunt involved planes and surface vessels scouring Lake Erie for three men reported missing from a 21 foot cabin cruiser as weather allowed.
Negotiations resumed today aimed at settling the 75 day strike at the Ohio Associated Telephone. Hotel Hard & is noted as the site of renewed talks.
Democrat Sen William M Boyd introduces a bill to remove rent ceilings statewide by October 1 arguing federal law allows states to end controls. He cites no housing shortage and notes no comment from housing officials. Governor Lausche favors retaining controls for now.
State Highway Patrolmen transported blood from Columbus to Newark City Hospital last night as an emergency service for Mrs. Fred Nichols of Buckeye Lake who was undergoing surgery.
John LaCorte of Glouster faces a first degree murder indictment for the June 10 shooting death of Anna Lewis at Buckeye Restaurant. Grand jury also charged Earl Baus Arthur Engleskind and Earl Sadler with crimes including breaking and entering larceny fraud and insufficient funds. Arraignments set for Wednesday at 10 am.
Police estimated 40 deaths and 563 missing as a typhoon with 115 mph winds struck Okinawa and Southern Japan. Destruction was heavy with 500+ houses destroyed and 4500 farms flooded. Communications disrupted and rail lines washed out as Kyushu telephone service failed. Sixty two boats destroyed and adrift.
A two engineer and one architect board was appointed to investigate the Apple Creek State School hospital project. State Welfare Director John H. Lamneck said the panel will examine a dispute between Public Works Director George B. Sowers and Cleveland architect Joseph A. Gatozzi, who was dismissed over alleged drawing errors and payment disagreements. Gatozzi claims dismissal came after he refused to approve payment for nonconforming work.
Four masked gunmen robbed Howard Johnson's in East Columbus early today and fled with about $1200. Three men were later arrested for questioning.
Congressional leaders push to bypass the 60 day waiting rule for Truman’s seven government reorganizations. Proposals include a Department of Welfare and changes to the Employment Security Bureau, Post Office, Civil Service, Maritime, and Public Roads administrations.
Pittsburgh leaders of the United Steelworkers and the Big Steel firm ended five exhausting hours of contract talks without progress on pensions. The union demands a pension plan and a wage rise to match living cost increases, while company officials insist the issue of pensions be deferred and only wages be discussed this year.
Hollie Starcher alarm reported in Gallipolis as Woodrow Saunders and state police investigated. Starcher, last of 14 Moundsville escapees, was seen at a bridge in Vinton but proved to be a hitchhiker and freed. Third alarm raised locally.
Columbus approved an ordinance requiring all city officials and employees to sign loyalty oaths making the city the first in Ohio with such a measure. The proposal was introduced a week earlier by Mayor James A. Rhodes.
Columbus resident Allen Schucker 20 was indicted for second degree manslaughter in the May 21 traffic death of Robert Lee Raidiger 21 of Waverly. Schucker an OSU student was the driver of the automobile involved in the fatal collision.
In Newark a two car crash left three people injured in a residential area with non life threatening injuries. Police investigated the mishap and cleared the scene.
Patterson a 27-year-old Tronton man faces first degree murder charges in the January 14 Columbus tavern killing of his wife Elizabeth 21. On the first trial day 11 women sat as jurors. He claimed she laughed at him and left with another man after he begged her to stay.
Nationalist planes damaged the British freighter Anchises injuring four crewmen. A Shell Oil Co warehouse burned destroying 20 000 tons of kerosene and other petroleum products. The raid diverted foreign ships and led to a Nationalist blockade to begin June 26.
Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced with President Truman's approval a plan to modernize two aircraft carriers at a total cost of 80 million dollars. He spoke to the National War College class, defending naval strength and atomic secrecy while outlining U S readiness and a stockpile oriented future. Johnson named Robert A Patterson to chair the Civilian Components Board and warned against overreliance on atomic force in future conflicts.
A weekend raid by seven State Liquor Department inspectors netted 277 cases of beer from the Moonlight Terrace at Indian Lake dance pavilion. The Moonlight Terrace is operated by Roll and Bowl, Inc., with Charles Horvath of Cleveland as president and principal stockholder. Horvath was recently denied a liquor permit for Re and Bowl.
Alfred Gordon Munro aged 73 and his wife Viola about 55, a former dramatic actress and lecturer, were found shot to death in Norfolk Connecticut in what medical examiner Dr. F D Arsone called murder and a death by own action. State Police Major John C Kelly identified the pair.
