In a 6-3 decision the Supreme Court holds that neither the Constitution nor federal law obligates states to fund elective abortions when mothers are not in danger. The ruling cites equal protection and the Social Security Act as not mandating state abortion funding, even as aid remains available for poor women who choose to bear children.
