Egypt's military rulers declared a republic ending the 148 year old Farouk dynasty and installing Maj Gen Mohammed Naguib as president. The Army Revolutionary Council also moved Lt Col Gamal Abdel Nasser to vice premier and interior minister. Naguib to serve as president and premier during a three year transitional period.

Total escaped in two days neared 26k while 9,398 remained in custody. Strong international reactions followed from Moscow and London as armistice talks hovered.

Geneva report: Louis Molner, 41, a research engineer, chained his 12 year old son Gary to a chair as punishment. He avoided jail though the judge warned of a possible year in prison and $1000 fine. Molner was charged with endangering the boy’s life and health.
Mrs Barbara Anne Darling and her sister faced charges as former communists in 1944. The testimony came from Berniece Baldwin of Detroit before a House Un American Activities subcommittee in Columbus. Darling refused to answer 81 questions, invoking the Fifth Amendment.
More than 100 prisoners were swept to safety as a roof fire broke out at the Summit County jail in Akron. Guards and deputies evacuated inmates and transferred them to Barberton Cuyahoga Falls and Akron jails without disorder. Fire crews from across the city battled the blaze.
Huntington district engineers announced low bids for access roads and paving at Tom Jenkins Dam. Tom Jenkins Highway Maintenance Co of Athens Ohio submitted a bid of 4838 dollars as part of the contract proposals.
Joseph E. Abrams 37 of Ironton was coaxed from a 10th floor ledge at Ohio State University Hospital after he stood on a three foot projection for 15 minutes. He had been admitted June 16 for medical observation and did not threaten to jump.
The Air Force cancelled seven of seventeen giant presses ordered to speed warplane production. Secretary Talbot said the reduction was due to lesser need and noted the presses caused problems requiring time to resolve.
Seoul reports President Rhee urged President Eisenhower to seek a remedy other than a division creating truce. He warned an armistice tied to a mutual defense pact would undermine its effect while calling for sustained UN cooperation and a forthcoming ceasefire. Foreign Minister Lester B. Pearson said Canadian troops in Korea would not be used to support any fighting by South Korea against the North after an armistice. He added Canada is under no obligation to participate in operations by the South Korean government unless approved by the United Nations. Pearson did not comment on possible use of troops to roundup escapee POWs.
In Columbus the Ohio Senate advanced a nearly balanced 837 million dollar state budget aiming for a showdown vote. Republicans vowed to block welfare restorations while preserving a six million charge-off for the industrial commission insurance fund. The plan keeps half the workers compensation act costs from commission funds and half from general funds, with Democrats signaling support for welfare restorations but backing the industrial fund charge-off. The balance would bring Lausche's proposed 831 million budget close to balance, and schools would gain 16 million more than the governor's 215 million school aid for the next two years.
Sheriff Burl E. Justice said he believes the body of Lucille Bias was dumped in a heavily wooded area near Otway. Searchers found bone fragments after 47 year old Adron Trigger Bias led police to the site. Bias claimed his wife threatened to reveal armed robberies and was killed in February while he awaited trial. 120 Boy Scouts planned to join the hunt.
Former President and Mrs. Truman depart Independence for a Washington trip their first since leaving the White House. Friends in Washington expect a five day stay starting Monday night to see his former Senate colleagues and several Cabinet members.
Dr Edmund Kase Jr quits Wednesday as head of Western College for Women to return to teaching. Effective June 30 his two year presidency ends and he may extend a year in car education before resuming teaching. Dean Edward W Pohlman to serve as acting president.
