Tax Reform Proposals Spark Athens Hearing On Ohio Plan
Citizens including Mayor Raymond Shepard attended a public hearing in Ohio University Seigfried Hall as part of a statewide review of proposed tax reform measures. The Batelle Memorial Institute report outlines 10 proposals aimed at shifting tax load from property to income and counties, with county revenue gains shown for Athens and neighboring counties. Mayor Shepard questioned municipal tax feasibility. Sealy noted regional administration and possible 10 percent overhead, while Athens collected about $500,000 last year at under 2 percent cost.
