Free Street Paving Project Deters South Y Traffic
An Athens street paving project caused traffic delays after a tractor trailer loaded with asphalt overturned at the South Y about 5:50 a.m. Darrell E. Minicks, 25, of Marietta Route 4, was uninjured and charged with conditional speeding. Regular traffic resumed around noon after five hours of cleanup.

Boy Hospitalized After Auto Strikes Bicycle
A four year old Nelsonville boy was admitted to Mount St. Mary Hospital after a Route 33 collision on Saturday morning. Michael W. Welch, riding north on his bike, turned into the path of Sheila K. Oney, 22, of Wellington, Ohio University student. Welch suffered a fractured left leg and body contusions. Oney was not cited. A separate incident on Route 682 at The Plains injured Julia K. Michael, 20, who complained of a balk back injury after debris caused a skid into a mailbox and tree.

Police Officer Joins Race In Escape Try
Athens County juvenile officer Sam Buffington opened a courthouse door for a 15 year old girl who fled through a basement exit and down Washington Street. The girl darted alleys past Woolworths, Court Street and John Newcomb's parking lot before a male youth halted her. Buffington and Athens Police Captain Charles Cochran helped recapture the gun suspect after a short chase. The weapon with a long court history was returned to juvenile detention quarters.
