Weeks of leftist rioting in Tokyo end with a Communist victory amid loud rhetoric and fist shaking. Not much blood spilled, but intense public demonstrations accompany President Eisenhower’s visit.
Japanese leftists gathered 65,000 demonstrators around the Diet to oppose the U S Japan security pact while a Socialist leader Jotaro Kawakami was stabbed by a rightist. Premier Nobusuke Kishi remains in office until the treaty takes effect then elections will be held to seek a mandate. Date not given.
Peiping Radio reported thousands of Chinese Communist guns bombarded Quemoy and nearby islets in a display of contempt for President Eisenhower. The Nationalist Defense Ministry said fire eased after 55 minutes. Inhabitants were warned to take cover as Eisenhower toured Formosa.
