Names floated include Lemke Ely and Townsend with Lemke eyed as Coughlin’s pick. experts say such a coalition lacks chance against Roosevelt and Landon.
In Richmond Virginia state penitentiary a prison guard and five convicts were critically wounded by machine gun fire during an attempted break. Guard D Bass, 55, was killed when Guard C H Smith fired on the fleeing group after they seized a truck with two guards and eight convicts moving toward a gate.
Washington report states Senator Dun can A. Fletcher aged 76, veteran lawmaker and former chairman of the banking and currency committee, died today. He was the second-oldest member and the second Florida senator to die within weeks, following colleague Park Trammell who passed away last month.
MOUNDSVILLE West Virginia War veteran William Ottie Rush aged 47 died prompting a probe into a possible robbery of his bonus money. Rush, a World War veteran, had recently returned home in a dazed condition and a check of odd amount he certified for payment was missing. The investigation focuses on whether he was robbed after certifying his fee for payment.
Mrs Helen Roth, 1, died from burns after a miner's lamp ignited a cleaning fluid she was using. The incident occurred at Barton as she prepared the lamp, leading to her fatal injuries.
Governor Davey asked the Legislature to increase the State Beate Bridge Commission from three to five members and to provide additional funds. He noted the original commission tied to Sandusky Bay Bridge and said new toll bridges along the Ohio River in cooperation with West Virginia and Kentucky are under consideration for future purchase.
Two naval fliers from the Cruiser Indianapolis were killed when their plane crashed into the sea during takeoff near Norfolk Virginia. COLUMBUS The levy outside the 10-mill limit voted by Pike County electors in the May primary for road funds was ruled illegally passed by Attorney General John W. Bricker. He told the prosecuting attorney that House Bill 579 limits special levies to two years, while Pike County commissioners set a three-year period.

John D M Hamilton who replaced Henry P Fletcher as national committee chairman left for New York for a finance committee meeting. Other members of the revamped executive committee accompanied him. Co B Goodspeed appointed treasurer of the committee will stop in Chicago where he will establish new national headquarters. Meanwhile the party's nominees for the nation's highest offices Gov Alf M Landon of Kansas for President and Frank Knox of Chicago for Vice President met again in Topeka to confer on details of speaking itineraries and their general methods of attack. The party organization was changed Tuesday with seven new members of the national executive committee joining eight Old Guard leaders on the group which will hold the reins of the party's drive. Hamilton and Fletcher traded jobs. Fletcher moved back to the post of general consul and to the hands of 44 year old Hamilton went the major duties of managing the G O P. The opening shot of the campaign will be fired by Hamilton in New York June 22 over a national broadcasting hookup. At that time Landon and Knox will be resting the former in Estes Park Colo and the later in Manchester NH. Shortly thereafter they will open active speaking campaigns.
The body of Jean Philip Gebhardt, eccentric electrician, was identified as the man who visited D McFarlan Moore on the night Moore was shot on his lawn. Gebhardt died Tuesday in Red Bank New Jersey after shooting himself as officers approached him with the same model .22 rifle used in the Moore murder. He had invented radio appliances and held two patents, not profitable. Police theorize a deranged belief Moore infringed on his work.
A Penn Forwarding Co bus ran off a road two and a half miles east of Twinsburg near a hill crest and struck a culvert headwall. Three people were critically hurt and 17 others sustained minor injuries. the bus traveled about 200 feet along a ditch before impact, according to Deputy Sheriff O. G. Bailey.
At a Federal Communications Commission briefing Edward H. Armstrong of Columbia University unveiled a radio broadcast system promising zero static. He demonstrated using frequency modulation to reproduce a jazz record with no outside noises, while thunderstorms caused no interference to the 500 engineers in attendance.

Urbana city solicitor J Edgar Tait issued an official opinion to the school board ruling that barring married women from teaching is discriminatory. The board had voted 4 to 1 not to rehire five married teachers, but Tait argued state qualifications do not require teachers to be unmarried.
In New Philadelphia, Joseph Johnson aged 9, son of Charles Johnson, drowned Tuesday evening at the riffles of the Tuscarawas River after becoming exhausted during a swim. Local authorities are investigating the incident.
Topeka Kansas reports Governor Landon the Republican presidential nominee will not receive a veterans bonus. He served in World War I and has taken no veterans' compensation at any time.
