Tax on Telegrams Won’t Cut Message Volume
Forest D. Chism of the Athens Western Union office says the five per cent tax on all telegrams starting June 21 will not curb message quantity. He cites postage rate increases as the main reason people will still use telegraph service. The tax raises a 30 cent telegram to 32 cents and on two simultaneous messages applies to the total with fractional amounts dropping below half a cent. The tax goes to central agency offices, not from each local office.
