City officials urge rebuilding White's Mill dam to impound water for a future wellfield. The privately owned structure lies partly inside and outside the city, complicating funding and repairs. Officials note no current supply problems but warn the dam’s condition behind the river could affect the water table and drought resilience.
Athens County agricultural agent Ken Ackerman reports a severe drought across Ohio with farmers losing a quarter to half of first hay cutting and pastures at 25 percent normal. rainfall is minimal, few storms interrupted drought, and gardeners should water trees shrubs and vegetables deeply and in evenings to protect plants.
Keith D. Ashley announces the Roush and Allied Families Association of America plans a fourth volume of family history. Submissions must arrive by Sept 1 to Walden F. Roush in Point Pleasant West Virginia, with inquiries to Keith D. Ashley in Racine Ohio or by phone.
Ohio University plans a two week workshop on canoe camping in Quetec Superior Forest Ontario from August 6 to 20. Participants may take the course for non credit or earn four credits, with a $200 outfitting travel and meals fee. Information available from R L Dingle or the Workshops Office.
Wayne A. Evans graduates with a master’s in marine biology from the University of the Southern Pacific in California. A Nelsonville York High School and Ohio University alumnus, he and his wife Carol plan to return to Athens this fall to pursue a PhD at OU. He is the son of Mr and Mrs Harry A. Evans of Nelsonville.
