A Dayton attorney sues in U S District Court to void Ohio congressional districts and forces Gov. Rhodes to call a special session to redraw districts. He argues population gaps violate voting rights, citing 1960 census figures with 3rd district largest and 15th smallest.
Buckeye Boys State activity centers on new governor appointments as Ohio Governor James A. Rhodes leads a joint session in Bird Arena. Lt. Gov. John Brown earlier spoke, with Gregory McKenzie of Cincinnati serving as Boys State Governor. Over 1309 high school students participate as 81 join the Highway Patrol program.
A Senate subcommittee opened hearings on infant adoptions amid testimony that children can sell for up to 7500 in secret markets. Chairman Sen. Thomas J. Dodd outlined proposed penalties of up to five years imprisonment and a 10000 dollar fine for profiteering in interstate or foreign child placements. Witnesses included Katherine B. Dettinger of the Children's Bureau and Theresa L. Heath of the New York City Police Department.
Two barges struck the world's longest bridge before dawn, sending a Trailways bus into Lake Pontchartrain. Six passengers died, five bodies recovered, one remained trapped. Divers found several bodies. Coast Guard resuced one survivor and retrieved another body from the lake. The crash left about 200 feet of the causeway damaged as the towboat Rebel Jr. pushed the barges eight miles from the New Orleans end.
Premier Khrushchev lands aboard the Bashkiria in Copenhagen as security tightens for his five day stay. Danish officials greet him while crowds are subdued, with trade talks expected and a tour of Funen farms planned before Sweden and Norway stops.
Tornadoes thunderstorms high winds and hail swept Ohio Monday with injuries reported in at least three persons and damage across many areas. A tornado touched down in Wyandot County between Wharton and Carey flattening rural buildings and trees and striking the Carey edge. Three people were injured when a supermarket roof and walls were ripped away at Carey’s edge.
Kingsley Taft has assigned Guernsey County Common Pleas Judge Delbert L. Tedrick to Athens County suit against Eleanor White of Athens Route 4. Prosecutor seeks $9541.16 repaid for payments from Nov 2, 1958, to Feb 8, 1961 while she served as divorce investigator for her husband Francis D. White then common pleas judge. No trial date set.
Roger Cole, 12, of Rt. 1 Waterloo, stepped into deep water in a farm pond Monday and drowned. Highway Patrol skindivers recovered the body.
Meigs County Judge John C Bacon rejected four defense requests in the second degree murder case of Jack Osler also known as Oiler. The defense sought to obtain statements autopsy and lie detector details plus a postponement to bring in the pathologist. Judge allowed autopsy photos and weapon inspection.
Mrs Annie Glenn wife of the Ohio astronaut who made the nations first orbital space flight is reported in good condition after undergoing major surgery to remove a calcium deposit from her shoulder.
A massive earthquake rocked Niigata in northern Japan causing fires and widespread destruction. The disaster left unknown deaths but reports pegged national tolls at 21 dead and 108 injured, with oil tanks burning and critical infrastructure damaged across ten prefectures.
Senator Barry Goldwater, addressing Texas Republicans, pledges to lead a united GOP ticket to victory in November 1964. Gov. William Scranton joins the push, arguing a Goldwater ticket could defeat Republicans in Congress and at state and local levels. Goldwater says the party can win the South and the nation.
In Columbus the Ohio GOP delegates split as 15 favor Goldwater, 10 back Scranton, one supports Nixon, and the remainder cling to Rhodes for the first ballot as momentum shifts in the party’s presidential race.
New York Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller convened a meeting of campaign leaders from across the country to discuss his withdrawal from the Republican presidential race in favor of Gov. William Scranton of Pennsylvania. He said no delegates would be released yet due to the need to consult delegates pledged to him.
Pennsylvania Governor William Scranton spoke at a Kansas luncheon urging GOP unity. He warned Democrats could attack the party if conservatism is tarnished and pressed Kansas for support toward the San Francisco convention amid expectations for Barry Goldwater.
Senators from the Dixie faction questioned Monday whether amendments to the civil rights bill could be completed this week. Sen. Richard Russell of Georgia called such talk fantastic while Sen. Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota urged readiness to stay in session late to dispose of amendments. House leaders expressed confidence the bill would reach President Johnson after adjournment on July 2 if Senate moves proceed this week.
An Ohio Education Association committee finds fault across the Belpre community, the school board, and teachers in the ongoing dispute. It found no evidence against Superintendent Donald Shimer, who leaves Aug. 1, amid student walkouts and teacher protests that sparked controversy and division.
The Ohio Selective Service Headquarters said starting in July local boards will call for physical exams those who registered in January 1964 or later, are 18 on registration, and are out of school with no deferment. Col. Raymond E. Clouse stressed no immediate induction of these younger registrants.
