Double Death Mystery Narrows to Public Scandal
A scandalous case once reported as a sensational double death by own action has faded in public view. A married man and a young girl linked to the tale were reportedly seen together in Charleston, West Virginia after disappearing, per neighbor Albert Ginther. Charles J. Gibbs, 61, of Midport, died in a Charleston hospital early Tuesday. He leaves a wife and several grown children. A memorial program at Pomeroy Opera House honored Gibbs with music, rituals, and a speech by William S. Reed. Will C. Merritt, new county schools superintendent, left to attend a conference on state aid, salaries, and qualifications for the education fund next year.

Courthouse Bond Debate Shows Public Utilities to Bear Major Share
Analysis of Hocking county records shows total tax duplicate for 1921 at 51.6 million with public utilities and incorporated companies contributing the bulk of costs for a proposed 250000 bond for a new courthouse. If approved for 25 year serial bonds at six percent, the larger share would fall on utilities and corporations rather than unincorporated villages and farmers.

Petition Drives Warner Avenue Paving Plan At City Council
At Tuesday’s council session a petition with over ninety percent of Warner Avenue property owners urged paving from the current improvement end to the corporation line. City Auditor Krieg said the service fund no longer exists, leaving no money for lighting bills or officers’ salaries. Across the state this funding squeeze is common. Under rule suspension the next fiscal year’s fund needs were certified to the county auditor, with a likely nine mill city levy replacing the usual three and a half mills. The estimate may be pared down. Steps were taken to form a city health district and a 32500 appropriation was requested for department expenses, promising an all time city nurse if secured.
