A crack Prussian Guard division, moving to the rear after heavy losses, was recalled to blunt American gains near Bussiares. From May 27 to June 9 it suffered severe casualties in clashes with American and French forces, its company strength dropping from 90 to 45–60 men.
J B Corns of Ironton withdraws from the race as Lawrence county Republican committee endorses Israel M Foster for Congress in the Tenth. Athens and Lawrence counties back Foster, leaving Foster and Switzer as the remaining candidates. Foster also endorsed for governor by Athens officials.
German newspapers condemn the consequences of World War I on German interests in America. The Koelnische Zeitung says President Wilson succeeds while German ambitions suffer in the United States. Volka Zeitung predicts Germans will be barred from entering, and German lines face blacklists and closures of yards and offices.
Columbus reports Secretary Shaw reappoints Jos. Hibbard of Athens as deputy fish and game warden. The action formalizes his new term and reinforces wildlife enforcement efforts in the region.
Washington reports the British American military convention awaiting Senate ratification exempts Irish and Australians, leaves Americans aged 21 to 31 subject to draft in Great Britain and Canada, and sets age ranges for others. The treaty calls for notes between governments clarifying application of draft laws.
President Wilson endorses Maryland 18 to 50 work or fight legislation, signaling admin stance on upcoming selective service. St Paul June 14 Organized labor will insist on an eight hour work day during the war. The American Federation of Labor convention adopted resolutions to this effect and rejected a plan to add two women to the Executive Committee. The convention retains the power to choose the annual meeting city.
The Starved Rock centennial event will stage a reenactment of the arrival of the first white men and French explorers including Father Marquette Tonti and La Salle. Governor Lowden will speak to about 30 000 attendees during the celebration marking Illinois admission to statehood.
Washington reports Navy Department casualty list shows sixty three Marines, many officers, with eight killed in action and fifty severely wounded. Corporal Karl Wilson Locke of Perry, Ohio, killed in action, among the injured are First Lieutenant Charles D. Roberts of Columbus and Privates Harry Hoffman of Lancaster Edward Christner of Canal Dover and George Jackson of West Park plus others.
New York on June 15 reports sirens erected to warn in case of air raids. The devices have a carrying power of two to three miles and are part of civil defense measures in the city.
Paris reports artillery fighting along the Oise and Marne fronts with French patrols taking prisoners in Champagne. London notes raiding success north of Bethune yielding over sixty prisoners and repulsed enemy raid near Aveluy Wood. Paris indicates improved situation and ongoing Paris defense preparations.
On Wednesday June 26, 143 men from Athens will depart for Camp Sherman marking the second largest county call since induction began. The prior large group of 144 left last month.
Eighteen men called for army service go to Cincinnati for training as woodworkers machinists blacksmiths electricians and radio operators. Ten from Glouster plus four to the University of Cincinnati to train as mechanics.
Moscow dispatch notes German buildup in the Pskov region as Korniloff with allied Caucasus forces advance. Ekaterinodar and Petrovsk are said to be occupied. A political strike targets Soviet chiefs. The central committee calls a fifth convention for June 28.
Treasury figures reveal 206 individuals reported more than 1 000 000 in 1916 while 376 had incomes between 500 000 and 1 000 000. The report notes incomes of 5000 to 9000 a year exceeded those from 4000 to 5000.
Last evening a Ford truck struck a man named Smith at the traction line crossing near Chauncey as a car approached. Smith and another occupant fled the auto loaded with ice. the car hit midships, the vehicle left the road and was wrecked in a ditch.
