Last of Ray Escape Gang Recaptured at Brushy Mountain

The final fugitive from Brushy Mountain State Prison, Douglas Shelton, 32, was recaptured near the New River area in Anderson County five miles from the prison. Shelton helped construct the makeshift ladder used to scale the wall as authorities traced James Earl Ray and Earl Hill. Ray and Hill were captured days earlier and are once again in D block with temporary overcrowding noted by officials. Ray offered a quiet demeanor upon return and refused a medical exam.

Would-Be Nun Slain During Silent Retreat Near Wheeling

Roberta Elam a 26 year old prenovitiate candidate for the Sisters of Mt. St. Joseph was found dead in a field near the Mt. St. Joseph Mother House while on a silent retreat. Police believe she was raped and strangled with no solid leads. Bloodhounds were used and autopsy scheduled as investigators assess a midday attack between 11 am and 1 pm. She was formerly from Allendale New Jersey and was staying at the mother house area.
