Police moved into Roosevelt Park after violent clashes sparked by arrests for public drinking. A civil emergency was declared with a 1 to 6 am curfew as 13 people suffered gunshot wounds and lootings continued citywide. Police arrested about 30 holdouts in the park.
President Nixon convened a White House meeting with key administration leaders and seven ambassadors including envoys to Mexico Turkey South Vietnam Thailand France Luxembourg and the UN to review rising narcotics use. Secretary Rogers Attorney General Mitchell and Treasury chief Connally attended as part of a broader push to curb drug traffic and youth drug culture at home and abroad.
Seven people were killed and one wounded critically in a Hazelwood Street dope pad. Police found heroin and a dozen guns in the two story home where four women were tied and slain, part of a suspected narcotics war in Detroit.
