A cloudburst sent the Hocking river and tributaries over banks, flooding Murray City and Corning and damaging homes, businesses, and crops. A five foot wall of water swept streets, destroying autos, washing out bridges, halting trains, and cutting gas and communications in the region.
Murray City suffered a sudden five foot flood following a cloudburst. Destruction spans stores on Main Street including Spres and Atlas general store with 8000 to 10000 dollars damage, and Clifford Wright’s barber shop washed away. Residents marooned as mud and water devastate homes along Smokey Row and New Town. A relief committee and Red Cross appeal are planned.
Ohio coal fields face continued tension as operators and miners fail to unite on wage terms. A. A. Augustus and George M. Jones of the operators oppose Jacksonville scale, while Lee Hall and George W. Savage of United Mine Workers defer compromise. A meeting was urged to re open talks on a base no less than November agreement.
A Sandusky political crowd hails James T. Begg as the foremost Ohio congressman since General Grosvenor. Begg, praised for success, may run for governor in Obia. He spoke in Athens and at local events before Longworth’s rise solidified House leadership. Begg’s career spans teaching, school administration, and years on foreign affairs committee.
Richard Loeb, one of the so called thrill slayers of 14 year old Robert Franks, marks his 22nd birthday in the Illinois state penitentiary. Gifts of food and trinkets are allowed and supplied by his family. Dicky Leeb and Nathan Leo fold, sons of Chicago millionaires, are serving sentences of life and nine years for their crime.
Nome Alaska reports twenty people saved today after a ten mile ice floe chase to shore. The smali motorship Carpenter was stuck in open water while crew and passengers walked toward safety for vegetables and supplies after eight months of shortages. Meanwhile Kenton notes a separate report of magicians from the International Brotherhood of Magicians concluding a three day show.
Joseph Trester twenty one, a baker, walked to a hospital after a blow fractured his skull. He collapsed in the receiving ward. Physicians say he probably will die. Trester accused James Hicks forty two, a watchman, of attacking him during an argument. Hicks was arrested and held pending Trester’s condition.
The condition of Ralph Jennings of Athens is reported as serious after an operation in Columbus Saturday morning. The surgery lasted one hour and twenty minutes to remove a distended gall bladder. A Columbus telegram at 7 PM stated he had not yet fully recovered from the operation’s aftereffects.
The bodies of John Hickman and George Vargo lay in a Bleak morgue awaiting burial as relatives decide. both were executed in the electric chair at the Ohio penitentiary after being condemned for murder. Hickman, the older inmate, showed calm demeanor before death, bidding farewell to prison chaplain Rev. T O Reed. Vargo died at 9:15 p m following Hickman with an shaken, expressionless gaze. Relatives plan to have Hickman shipped to near Nelsonville.
A herd of cattle stampeded into the Ohio River during ferry transport and attempted to swim the crossing. Fourteen animals drowned, with carcasses recovered up to seven miles downstream and ongoing salvage efforts reported from Gallipolis.
The weekly weather report for the Ohio valley predicts thunder showers in the early part of the week and again in the latter half. Temperatures are expected to be normal or above.
Twenty four union officials and miners named as defendants filed a general denial to charges from Lick Run Coal and Clay company. They seek dismissal of the petition for injunction while a temporary restraining order remains in effect. Ort Daugherty warned he would violate the injunction if granted and challenge it in court.
Registration begins Monday for Ohio University summer session with classes starting Tuesday at 7 am. The nine week term ends August 12 and counts as a half semester toward diplomas. Faculty includes eighty summer school staff and fifteen for teacher training. State education rules require teachers to complete nine semester hours in summer for certificate renewal.
President Coolidge and a crowd of about a hundred thousand greet Charles A. Lindbergh in Washington. Lindbergh receives the Distinguished Flying Cross and calls from Europe for a message of affection to the American people.
