Air Force Colonel Sets Ground Speed Record at Holloman

Lt. Col. John Stapp, 43, achieves 421 mph on a rocket sled at Holloman Air Force Base, a new ground speed record for a human. The test simulates high altitude bailouts and extreme deceleration, with peak forces around 22 g and a 3,500 foot seven second run. Stapp, veteran aviator and aviation medicine researcher, previously reached 180 mph, surpassing the prior ground record by John Cobb at Bonneville in 1947.

Patrolman to testify in own defense in manslaughter trial

Ironton. Robert Brickles a former state highway patrolman is to take the witness stand today in his own defense at a second degree manslaughter trial. He is accused of driving a hit skp that killed Coal Grove policeman Carl Green on U S 52 near Ironton March 5. Brickles contends he was not the driver. A nine and three woman jury hears the case. The state finished its testimony after Elizabeth Bradley and Sarah Blevins testified they were with Brickles and that he was the driver after a beer drinking party.
