Brookhart’s Iowa Republican primary win signals possible split in the party as farm relief advocates push for program aid. The White House may retreat from subsidy plans, adjournment of Congress could be delayed, and the Haugen bill may pass with compromises in conference.
The Alumni golf contest at Athens Country Club was won by Wm. H. Herbert of Geneva Ohio with a low net score of 73. He receives the cup for one year. Don Peden and Thomas Liggett tied for 76. Butch Grover and Sam Johnson tied for low gross at 89.
A Washington Information Bureau offering a free booklet with exterior views and floor plans of 60 brick houses. The pamphlet shows how affordable ownership can be and suggests sending two cents for postage to receive the copy.
Ed Griffith pleaded guilty to reckless driving after wrecking the Mt Vernon barber’s car. He was fined $10 with costs totaling $16.50 when arraigned before Justice Carl Porter. Traffic Officer Howard Gilson made the arrest.
Brazil signals intention to leave the League of Nations and return to the policy of America for Americans. It has sent memoranda to South American governments detailing its Geneva stance, with replies received from Chile Venezuela Bolivia Uruguay Ecuador Peru and possibly others. The texts have not been released, and domestic press remains split on the issue.
Athens Livestock company, via N E Mills, reports shipping 136 veals recently. Eight veals topped the market at 14 cents, about $2,000 total. Seconds fetched 11 to 11.5 cents and culls 8.5 to 9 cents. W R Goddard of Amesville led with two veals netting $58.11. many others also surpassed $20 in receipts.
Cincinnati bootleg king George Remus plans to appeal his prohibition conviction directly to President Calvin Coolidge after the Supreme Court refused to review his case. The вероятный appeal follows his one year sentence in Montgomery County jail.

Julius Coleman Dellinger, known as Charley Ross, says he is the long lost son of the Germantown millionaire, kidnapped in 1874. Mrs. Pierre C. Starr of New York, a Ross cousin, has recognized him, but Walter L. Ross and other relatives dispute the claim. A photo compares Dellinger today in Shelby, North Carolina with Charley’s likeness at the time of the disappearance.
June brings wedding licenses with twelve issued so far five granted yesterday. Couples include Arthur Smedley and Laura Doty Columbus Athens Nelsonville and couples Slye Straus McKnight Rizer Scott and McDaniel Athens Nelsonville Albany New Marshfield.
Fire swept the rear bedroom of Roy Dupler’s home behind the Messenger building this afternoon at 2 o’clock. Officials say sparks from a bonfire in the back caused the blaze, which was contained by the Athens fire department.
The League of Nations council voted to end all control of Austrian finances on June 30 marking Austria’s rehabilitation as a major league achievement. Sir Austen Chamberlain praised the move while Mello Franco was present after earlier absences. The council also faced tensions as the disarmament subcommission argued over adjournment after two weeks of talks.
June 9. Near the High and Front street intersection Marshal Williams shot a run over dog. The bullet glanced off the animal and struck 14 year old Elsie Wallace on the left foot. An X ray showed no bullet traces and the injury is not considered serious.
Former Attorney General Edward C. Turner of Columbus filed his declaration of candidacy for the Republican nomination for attorney general. Turner previously held the office in 1915-1916 and lost reelection in the Wilson landslide of 1916.

Mrs. Johnson M. Welch, 84, once of Athens, is in serious condition in a Glendale hospital after a bathroom fire sparked by her night attire. Her husband Mr. Welch died in Athens over ten years ago. she is known for art and sculpture.
Ninety six Athens high school seniors received diplomas in an informal program led by class leaders. Speakers included Oscar Neal Fanny Davidson Jim Patterson and Mary Kircher. The orchestra and chorus performed while most graduates plan to enter Ohio University this summer or fall.
In Olive township Meigs county near Lyda a 6 month old child strangled in its bed. Mr and Mrs Ed Blake left the infant asleep in its cradle for a short time and upon returning found the baby dead. It had crawled to the bed edge and became hung between the bed edge and wall.
The Anti-Cants club met at the fairgrounds in Coolville yesterday afternoon for a picnic and social hour. County farm agent T. H. Johnson led volleyball and baseball activities while club adviser Mrs. Fred Alden attended the event.
The federal grand jury returned a not guilty verdict for four Athens County men Willard Pierce John Barnhart Herbert Bailey and Pearl McDonald accused of conspiring to violate the national prohibition act and possessing distilling equipment Dell Woods of Chauncey pleaded guilty and faces sentence Saturday Testimony cited the men operating a still in a remote spot in Vinton county with others present.

Washington June 9 A judiciary committee report on the Goff Grahm Andrews enforcement bill tightens the Volstead act by deleting Andrews proposed search of private dwellings for stills. Other provisions pass. Committee asks for a special rule to bring the measure before the House. Senate version by Goff WV may not be acted this session.
Charles Stowers accuses Wade Jarvis of selling a car without a bill of sale. Jarvis pleads not guilty before Justice Carl Porter. Stowers says the sale occurred last fall and no bill of sale has been delivered. Trial set for June 16.
In Sunday Creek Coal company mines at Corning and nearby areas, activity is nearly idle with workers scarce and mines operating one or two days weekly. Jacksonville area mines face similar shortages, with no summer improvement seen. Many miners have left for other Middle West regions seeking any available work.
Springfield reports that Rev. Dr. Benjamin Seigler of Findlay was reelected to head the Wittenberg College board of directors. Seigler will serve another term as chair following the vote held late yesterday.
The Athens lodge of Elks holds its annual Flag Day memorial Sunday at 7 30 p.m. at the Majestic theater. Nine flags will appear in the program with organ solos by Mrs Dorothy Larber. I M Foster now with the U S Court of Claims in Washington will give the address. Class Six chorus of the First Methodist church leads singing. Admission is free and the event is open to all.
Children's Day exercises will be held at the Richland avenue M. P. Church at 7 66 Sunday evening.
Clarence Darrow, the Chicago lawyer, commented that the Nebraska judge who gave two state violators forty days on bread and water must be a prohibitionist. The remark came as the case drew attention in Chicago.
Nine of twelve aliens failed before Judge Worstell in Common Pleas Court due to gaps in knowledge of U S government and English. Three passed on first attempt: Henry Kutta, Demeter Kekete of Hollister, and Mike Gyre of Hollister. Fourteen eligible, twelve appeared, three passed, one dismissed. Prof. J P Porter of Ohio University spoke on needed language and government knowledge. City Federation presented flags to the three successful examinees.
