City Officials Eye Aid For Athens County Projects

Athens Mayor Donald Barrett offered to help fund two county projects the Athens County commissioners pursue. The two story public health building at the county fairgrounds needs a 40 000 local share, with 140 000 in federal funds and a total cost near 202 000. A separate proposal seeks 20 000 from the Ohio Department of Urban Affairs for indigent defense via a joint fund for the County Common Pleas Court and Municipal Court, paying volunteer lawyers at 75 percent of their minimum fee. The commissioners pledged 2 000 cash, and a countywide meeting is planned to engage more municipalities in funding the health facility housing the health department.
