Athens to add four firemen and street supervisor
Athens City Council approved adding four full time firemen and a streets supervisor amid debate on township aid and funding. Fire Chief Parker cited understaffing and a $90 000 incident at the Frogen Foodbank as justification. A 72 hour week is planned with probationary pay rising to 185, and civil service exams will be required. The street supervisor will earn 775 monthly, funded by transfers to the street repair fund. A separate protest over a proposed garbage dump location near Hope farm drew rural opposition, while carnival oversight remains limited to landowner permissions. Mayor Mickle reported May fines and license income totaling 1880.12.
