Merion Course Seen as Tough Test for Open Championship
Among 165 entrants for the 50th U S Open at Merion Golf Club in Ardmore Pa players including Ben Hogan Sammy Snead Jimmy Demaret Cary Middlecoff Frank Stranahan Lloyd Mangrum Jack Burke Jr and others call the 6694 yard par 70 layout a severe test. They warn that accuracy off the tee and precise putting on slick treacherous greens will decide the result with a likely winning score around 283 and no one expecting par for 72 holes to be broken. Weather could slow greens as rain lingers in the area.
