New York notes that German reserves are seriously depleted since the March 21 spring drive. Von Hindenburg may have 400000 or fewer troops left, with 300000 possible, limiting any fresh offensive. The strain of extending the front weakens German reserves while aiding Allied prospects under General Foch’s strategy.
British airmen report a week and a half of relentless combat in the skies over occupied Europe. They say 336 German aircraft were downed by June 2 with 283 destroyed, while 5626 tons of explosives were dropped behind German lines. Attacks reach Mannheim Landau Koblenz and Cologne as bombers, protected by fighters, suffer few losses. Civilians and wounded in hospitals face severe injuries amid the bombardment.
The War Department announced that one hundred eighty four sick and wounded American soldiers were sent to the United States from the A E F during the week ending May 31. Sixteen men were sent home during the week ending May 24.
Wm H Pierre, deputy auditor for six years, announces candidacy for the Republican nomination. He cites experience and training and says he will campaign across the county seeking support. Also noted, the federal government tests many pistachio varieties from Central and Western Asia distributed nationwide.
German submarines enforcing a string of attacks against American shipping sunk the Edwin Baird yesterday and chased a French liner near Sandy Hook. A United States destroyer intervened to block the raid, while the submarine evaded capture after the chase.
International President Konenkamp issued blind strike orders to commercial telegraphers. Operators received procedure guidance for a walkout not planned for this week or early next week. The strike would affect Western Union and Postal Companies with potential intervention by President Wilson or the War Department.

American machine gunners with French infantry defend the south bank of the Marne from Chauteau-Thierry to Jaulgonne, forcing the Germans to keep clear of southern Chateau-Thierry. A famed French general lauds the Yankee unit for efficiency and bravery.
The Ohio University Kindergarten closes the regular year this morning and announces a summer session from 8 to 10 AM starting June 24 and ending August 21. Many registrations already received suggest a large enrollment for the term.
A 300 000 to 500 000 Jugo Slav army was promised by representatives Don Niko Grskovich and John Grgurevich to the United States as a reinforcement of troops abroad if Congress removes Jugo Slavs in America from enemy alien status. The group includes Lithuanians Slovens and other Austrian citizens not aligned with the Teutonic alliance. The offer was made to the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
The Kennilworth Castle, a 12,975 ton British liner with 332 aboard, arrived at an English port in a damaged state after colliding with a heavy object near midnight. Two explosions followed, several crew and passengers were lost, lifeboats were overturned, and rescuers saved many from the sea as the ship began to list before regaining a keel.
John Kalapos a 45 year old Hungarian employed at the Canaan Coal Company mine was badly hurt by a slate and coal fall. His right leg was crushed and he was otherwise injured. He was removed by Baughman’s ambulance to Logan hospital where an X-ray was taken.
Washington reports a War Department casualty list listing Horace H. Swickard of Toronto Ohio as slightly wounded among thirty four names. The list shows seven killed in action, three dead from wounds, four from disease, three from accident, twelve severely wounded, one wounded degree unknown, three wounded slightly, and one missing in action.
Washington presses plan to send a high level government representative abroad to coordinate war efforts beyond the military. Colonel House may be chosen or a broader board linking White House War and Navy departments. No official War Department announcement yet. British labor unions total about 5 million members split between the Labour Congress and Labour Party.
United Press describes American troops rushed from French command to Chateau-Thierry aiding the Marne push. Marines and other units fought in close, open warfare, repelling repeated German attacks as French praise flowed for the American stand near Jaulgonne and Neuilly Wood.
Washington reports 1,000,000 young men aged 21 registered for military service. Crowder directs mobilization of 200,000 more registrants across states, plus 40,000 African American workers. Total selective service reaches 1,595,704, pushing the army beyond two million when in camp. Ohio asked to furnish 80 men, Indiana 4,000 to Camp Sherman. Arizona excluded amid unclear explanation.
Washington reports the navy department says 6 submarine raiders have closed their position. The Norwegian steamer Eidsvold was sent to the bottom near the Virginia Capes at 4 pm yesterday. One rescue ship saved the entire crew. No new German moves are indicated since the raid began 30 hours earlier.
Lewes Delaware June 5 A port minefield at the mouth of Delaware Bay was torn up by United States mine sweepers Navy scouts exploded two mines planted by U boats at the entrance to the port and brought eight others to the naval station The sweepers continue careful search of the bay and approaches The mine field lies at the mouth of Delaware Bay in the path of outgoing ships Also note a flag raising event at Mi 210 Sugar Creek on Sunday June 9 at 2 oclock with music by the Canaanville Band and refreshments on the ground
