The Athens Young Women's Christian Temperance Union unveiled and presented a handsome public drinking fountain on the courthouse esplanade. Speakers praised temperance, noted funds raised from campus events, and honored donors including Prof. Dunkle and Prof. Merrill. May 30 1895 inscription states "For God and Home and every Land."
Memorial Day was observed last Thursday under Columbus Golden Post G A R. Members met at noon, marched at 1 pm with Co B Seventeenth O N G to city hall for exercises starting at 1. The hall was decorated with national colors flowers and portraits of Lincoln Grant Garfield. Rev George W Pepper gave the day’s address. A parade followed to old and new cemeteries and then State Hospital cemetery for flowers on the graves. Music by the Athens Military band was praised.
Rev H W Weakley D D of Christ s Hospital Cincinnati preached to a graduating high school class at the parsonage. Next Sunday Children s Day includes a morning sermon and an evening program. Frank Schofield of the University senior class preached last Sabbath evening. Dr Super led Memorial Sabbath service during the pastor s absence at Jackson. Junior League splits into two sections with 2 pm and 4 pm Sabbath meetings. Visiting Rev and Mrs Murdoch stayed with Judge J M Tripp and wife, Tripp an Ohio University trustee.
