David Lawrence argues that the Okinawa campaign reveals greater military incompetence than Pearl Harbor, with Army, Navy, and Marine losses totaling thousands killed and wounded. He cites mismanaged air base establishment, slow ground operations, and faulty amphibious tactics, urging an independent board to uncover facts and prevent repeat disasters.

No Cutback in Research in Postwar Aviation
The piece argues that wartime aviation cutbacks will save money and shift labor to civilian jobs, but prompt a debate over postwar research. It urges a long term, government‑funded program to sustain jet propulsion and guided missiles development, lest past aviation errors recur. It calls for congressional authorization for the Army and Navy to direct and finance ongoing aviation research.
