Allied war ships again bombarded Pantelleria as British forces urged the Italian fleet to engage. Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower's headquarters reported shelling of key positions on Wednesday night with dawn assault planned, marking a renewed challenge to the Italian fortress.
Allied naval and air forces pressed assaults across the Mediterranean including Pantelleria and Spartivento while bombers hit coastal targets. Mussolini’s forces faced resistance in the Balkans as Greek and Yugoslav partisans report gains. Japan and China clash on Yangtze with heavy casualties on both sides. The US and British fronts note substantial Allied and Axis activity with numerous casualties and strategic movements.
In a response to time standard realignments, Lebanon agrees to advance clocks by one hour as part of the Eastern War initiative. Officials say the shift will synchronize schedules with allied regions and improve coordination. Local residents are advised to set clocks forward tonight.

The regional War Labor Board said wage hikes above 70 cents per hour will not be approved for common unskilled labor in seven leading Ohio cities: Youngstown Toledo Dayton Akron Canton Warren and Cleveland. Columbus tops at 65 cents while Cincinnati Covington Newport and Louisville hover at 60 and 55 cents respectively with West Virginia and other areas to be set soon.
A six hour stoppage by 35 cranemen at Republic Steel Corporation in Cleveland halted production for more than 500 workers yesterday.

The Ohio Conference of the Methodist Church voted to join the national Methodist Reserve pension fund. Dr. Lester Raush announced $660,576 of a $1,000,000 goal for the conference fund had been pledged and newly ordained ministers will participate immediately.
President Roosevelt said a miner who quits essential war work becomes liable for Army service. He spoke at a press conference about enforcing a broad rule applying to all workers, with few details on troop protection or a specific work or fight order. John L. Lewis offered no public reply as miners face a potential loyalty test.
The Huntington Are my Mothers Club asks Roosevelt Ickes Perkins and John L. Lewis to answer over a telegram: if the executive can force sons to military service it can compel Lewis and the United Mine Workers to return to work at once. Robert R. Bowman of East Liverpool Ohio, 25, a seaman first class, was among 10 survivors who drifted 23 days in an Atlantic lifeboat after their merchant vessel was torpedoed. They were picked up by a Portuguese fishing boat and brought to Lisbon, later arriving by air in London. Seven survivors were officers and the rest U S Navy men.
The Ohio District of the American Lutheran Church named two new officers and rejected six incumbents. New officers are the Rev. Walter F. Lodt of Pomeroy as secretary and the Rev. Gerald Ferme of Moulton as chaplain.
