The Sunday Creek Coal company in southern Ohio plans to reopen several Hocking Valley mines at a wage scale below what state and international officials demanded. Company officials say the move stems from requests by former employers in response to its April statement about why it cannot pay the Jacksonville wage scale that caused industry suspension.
Athens high school holds class day with 115 seniors receiving diplomas at 8 PM. Captain Charles A. Lindbergh arrived in Paris after a flight from London in two hours and 22 minutes of actual flying time. He landed at Le Bourget field at 10 a.m. and then prepared to sail from Cherbourg aboard the U S Memphis, ending his European visit before returning to the United States. A fog delay over the channel forced an extra takeoff and landing at Lympne on the Kent coast.
Storms and floods in Southeastern Kentucky have killed 47 people, with the death toll expected to rise as further details reach the state board of health. Dr. A. T. McCormack notes reports are preliminary and may update the count.
Federal agents and gendarmes raided the Soviet legation in Mexico City early today arresting ten men. They were released after investigators concluded the gathering inside the legation was not seditious. The raiders said a mistake had been made.

Jesse Sprout, 70, died from paralysis at his daughter Rowena Sprout's home in Fremont. He leaves two daughters from his first marriage, burial planned in Kansas, Ohio, and his second wife was sister to Mrs. Flowers.
Captain Charles A. Lindbergh’s Spirit of St Louis was loaded onto the U S S Memphis and the cruiser sailed from Southampton toward Cherbourg before noon today. The historic monoplane joins the Memphis during the voyage across the Channel.
Cleveland reports say coal mine operators aim to unite behind Sunday Creek policy after appeals to miners. The Hocking Valley saw a union protest at Lick Run in Nelsonville fail to close the mine. S H Robbins of the Ohio Coal Operators Association said the lake cargo rate decision becomes effective August 10, 1927, too late to aid Ohio miners. He noted Ohio coal output is small relative to capacity, markets have eroded, and a competitive wage scale is needed to reopen mines and restore steady jobs.
Stella Sowards obtained a divorce from Ira Sowards in Common Pleas court on grounds of neglect after alleging she must live in one room of a four room house with nine occupants. She was in default of answer. the marriage occurred at Millfield on August 29, 1924. They have no children and she revived her maiden name Stella Smith.
A wave of opposition to the parole of Mrs. Susan Kraus from the Marysville reformatory gathers here. Judge Miller and Prosecutor Peoples file protests while a local businessman hires counsel to oppose the parole. A copy of Kraus’ confession is presented to Prosecutor Peoples as he questions her, and Kraus’ husband remains in the Franklin County infirmary.
In Wilkes Barre police describe the killers as the nicest fellows. Jennie Monica, 19, and Edith Fonzo, 25, were found shot on a lonely road near the East Boston mine settlement. A new sedan with broken windshield was found nearby. Carmel Marranca, 35, of Pittston, held on stolen car evidence.
Senora Natalia Calles wife of the Mexican president died of a heart attack in Los Angeles after a major operation. She was 54 and had been convalescing for five days when the attack occurred. Her body will be sent to Mexico City later today.
A clash between guards and communist tobacco workers in Salonica left five dead or wounded. Authorities arrested nine communist women and about a hundred men after workers attempted to seize the governor's house.
Clare nce Chamberlin plans a 6 PM start for a non stop flight to Berlin aboard the Bellanca Columbia. Backers press for an official NY supervisor and a barograph on board. Roosevelt Field authorities granted permission to use the long runway for a heavy load take off. The flight will follow the most direct route about 4200 miles, with a pilot navigator on board.
Alf Oftedal of California assumed full charge as dry commissioner succeeding James E. Jones who becomes assistant commissioner. Oftedal, a former coal investigator on the Pacific coast, will oversee all administrative work of the bureau while Jones acts as liaison between headquarters and the civil service commission.
The murder of Mrs. Mary Sietsema in Chicago is under investigation. She was found garroted with piano lamp wire wound around her neck, in a pattern similar to a known Midwest and West strangling spree. Her husband reported finding the body Thursday.
President Coolidge will board the Mayflower after lunch and sail to Hampton Roads to view the Atlantic fleet at the Chesapeake Bay mouth. Ninety eight vessels will salute from the fleet as the president assesses the scene.
