Memorial Day observances unfold across local cemeteries and churches as the Meigs murder crew is moved to state prison. The community honors fallen service members while awaiting further legal steps in the case.
Memorial day was observed in Athens with services Sunday and Monday honoring veterans of all wars. Twenty five Civil War veterans attended the Union street cemetery program directed by Prof. S. H. Bing, who gave the address. The Athens high school 54 piece band led marches from the Christian church to the old and Union street cemeteries.
Colonel Carmi A. Thompson named head of a Coolidge economics mission to the Philippine Islands will depart Cleveland for Seattle and sail June 15. He is national commander of the Spanish American War Veterans organizations and will receive receptions by several departments on the way to the Pacific Northwest.
The national conference of social workers adjourned in Cleveland with John A. Lapp of Chicago chosen as president. He succeeds L. A. Halbert of Kansas City, Missouri.

Mrs. Lillie Nixon Green, 48, of Doanville, was shot in the abdomen by her husband John Green, 49, during a Memorial Day family gathering. Police say it was accidental as Green, who had been drinking, fired at the ceiling and the gun discharged during a struggle. Mrs. Green remains hospitalized in grave condition after emergency surgery. two other adults present deny foul play and report prior arguments but no witnesses to the shooting. The family includes five children, with Bertha Ege and Bala ham s at home or visiting.
Six Athens county men face conspiracy against the Volstead act and liquor manufacture charges in Columbus Federal Court after a Monday raid in Vinton county. Three 15 gallon stills and 18 gallons of whisky were seized with 11 barrels of mash destroyed. four men attempted to flee before arrest.
Cleveland readers recall a humorous 1898 automobile with the back seat in front and the front seat in back. John Henry steered from the rear while Mrs Henry and child rode up front as townsfolk gawked. The 1928 model, shown above, is owned by John Wyatt of Sayler Park Ohio with Cecilia Kessler at the throttle. The relic, once boiler powered, evokes early motoring quirks and social role reversals.
Washington dispatch notes Senator William E Borah Idaho demands qualified support for the Eighteenth Amendment and urges voters not to be swayed by nullification chatter. Borah, who has long influenced presidential posture, challenges Coolidge’s quiet stance on enforcement of the Volstead Act and uses the presidential gap to advance his own position.
In Bridgewater Massachusetts on June 1 a dynamite blast destroyed the home of Samuel Johnson a relative of Simon Johnson who helped arrest Sacco and Vanzetti six years ago. Johnson and his wife escaped but their baby daughter was cut and grabbed by flying splinters in the second floor room.
Mrs Ames E Foley of 36 East State Street was carried to Mercy hospital Columbus by Newsom-Walburn ambulance this morning for gallstone surgery arriving with Mrs Charles P Kircher, brother to Mrs Foley.
Seniors of Athens High School were selected to speak at the commencement. Marcella Flemuo and Jim Patterson earned selection for scholarship excellence. Mary Kircher and Fanny Davidson elected by popular vote. Oscar Neale and John Fields chosen by the faculty. John Miller, class president, to oversee the program.
The Mineral board of education announces new staff for the village school. Forrest Johnson will teach the upper grades and Miss Erma Judy will handle the lower grades for the upcoming term.
POMEROY June 1 Timothy King Tim O'Brien was sentenced to life without parole by Judge A P Miller after pleading not guilty and claiming innocence. Six men, including O'Brien and King Tim, face transfer to prison or death by electrocution on September 2 for a series of murders tied to Willys Hill.
Forrest Sapp and Donald Eblin, previously pleading not guilty to first degree murder, switch to guilty of second degree murder. Judge Miller sentences them after testimony and objections, noting intent to kill was not proven and actions aimed at burning the house due to outside influence.
The Akron balloon, an American entry, landed at Barale Nassau Holland at 7 45 after officials sought North Sea search by British Danish and Dutch admiralties. In Columbus June 1 Ohio Democrats prepare to launch the 1926 campaign with a plan to drop the two thirds rule for national conventions. Former Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels is expected to urge nominating by a majority of convention delegates at a state wide rally attended by about 1500 party leaders and officials.
Pennsylvania reports the highest number of hunting licenses issued among states, signaling a larger hunter population and strong outdoor recreation activity this season.
New York, June 1. The passenger steamer Priscilla, with 568 aboard on a Fall River run, scraped bottom near New London at 12:02 this morning and was towed into port. Officials said passengers were unaware of the danger and a special train was arranged to take them to Fall River and Boston.
Three linemen were electrocuted and two others burned when a deadline line they were working on blew across a high tension wire near Wailing Creek in Harlan Kentucky. Victims were Charles Lewellen 21 Gillis Durham 23 Pineville and James Fagan 25 Oliver Springs Tenn.
A letter from I W M describes a man near Athens gathering scraps tossed by section men and eating them. The next day a similar description is seen in Chauncey at 6 am along the sidewalk. A hardware store incident features a shopper asking for a buggy whip and a new clerk asking for clarification.

Miss Krider 22 of Racine and 16 year old Archer drown during a river outing at McKinley Avenue. Miss Krider found Sunday morning in three and a half feet of water near the sho fifty feet from the site of the drowning. Archer’s body recovered within an hour. Services held at Carmel Church and Greenwood Cemetery with Harshman giving remarks.
Irene Rosenberger age 12 was struck and killed by an automobile on Bay Shore road near Restmore Beach in Toledo as her siblings stood by. The incident ended in tragedy with authorities continuing a cautious investigation into the cause and vehicle details.
Two motor vehicle deaths were recorded in Cleveland over the holiday period. Ruth Idle aged 6 was killed when she ran into the path of a machine, and John Ciocca, 38, was crushed to death when his car overturned.
