Two large U.S. transports reporting arrival after a German super-dreadnought type submarine attacked them in mid-ocean. The sub was countered by destroyers after a failed periscope ruse. It surfaced to fire but submerging too late as depth charges struck. Oil marks the sinking site.
Governor Cox announced the reappointment of J. N. Smith of Marietta to a five year term on the Ohio State Board of Dental Examiners. The action was announced in Columbus on June 1.
General James A. Clarkson, 76, longtime chairman of the Republican national committee, died in New York. Born in Brookville Indiana, burial is set for Des Moines Indianapolis June 1. Charles W. Fairbanks, former Vice President, is reported gravely ill at his home.

Herb Bean of Guysville was jailed last night by Chief Porter on a charge of drunkenness and disturbing the peace as officers removed him to the city prison.
Paris reports Germans occupy a thirteen mile front on the north bank of the Marne between Chateau Thierry and Verneuil but have not crossed the river. British and French defend Rheims as violent engagements continue near Soissons and along the Dormans to Rheims road. French counterattacks recaptured Chaudin and Viezy with several hundred prisoners taken.
General Haig reports local clashes in Picardy with British gains. A hostile raid east of Villers-Bretonneux was repulsed. Fighting in Aveluy Wood and north of Albert yielded advantage and some prisoners were taken.
London reports a serious military situation as German forces advance 28 miles in five days. British and French reserves are moving smoothly to halt the German push with the aim of containing progress. German objectives include Amiens Paris and channel ports while reserves await deployment. The Crown Prince's armies have undisturbed reserves and the Aisne drive was preannounced but not fully anticipated.
Paris reports Premier Clemen ceau escaped capture by the Germans in a front town Thursday. He had just left with a small detachment when Germans entered. several of his party were killed or taken, including a general who was surveying positions with a field glass.
Mrs Sophronia Greathouse aged 84 died last evening at 6 at the home of her son in law and daughter Dr and Mrs C C Hill on East State street. Funeral services are set for Monday at 9 at St Pauls Catholic church with burial at Hebbardsville beside her husband Andrew Greathouse who died six years ago. She was born in Bolins Mill and spent most of her life there before moving to Athens about six years ago to live with the Hills.
United Mine Workers arrange for Bomber McGinnis to speak on bombing the bodies at the Methodist church next Tuesday evening at seven. Admission is free. McGinnis, a former Canadian soldier, describes trench fighting and gas attacks from No Man's Land and Somme tanks.
The French general Marquis de Lafayette made three trips to the United States. He first arrived in 1777 to aid in the American fight for independence. His second visit followed in 1784 and his final and third stay occurred in 1824.

Private David B. Flory of the Fourteenth Company, One and Fifty-fourth Depot Brigade at Camp Meade faced desertion charges. He was sentenced to 10 years at hard labor at Fort Jay New York, after an initial 20 year term, later reduced on review.
Columbus Ohio June 1 no bids were received by the state highway department Friday on the Athens and Logan road seven tenths of a mile in Athens county. There were no bids for the Washington county road for which bids were to be received.
Washington reports General Pershing listing fifty seven casualty names to the War Department. The breakdown lists three killed in action, six dead from wounds, ten dead from disease, one from an airplane accident, seven severely wounded, eleven slightly wounded, and nine missing in action. Chicago notes Senator James Hamilton Lewis stating the U S has one million troops abroad and may equal England in by December.
