British Sewing Boom War Tied Needles Scarcity
London reports a threatened needle shortage due to wartime steel needs for armaments. Women sew for the forces and families amid higher prices, with March fabric sales up 21 percent as patchwork and in-home clothing repair surge nationwide. The War Workroom aids bombed-out families by employing women to make clothes for distribution through London County Council.

One Woman to Another: Hot Watermelon Antics and Summer Nonsense
A lighthearted column recalls a Mulberry Street mishap where a watermelon was chilled with hot water, while neighbors joke about cooling methods. It notes lawn adaptations, a trio of men at 108 Sunnyside Drive cooling with shade and a garden hose, and a friendly contest to crown a “champion.” It ends with a recipe for Mrs Ellenberger’s bread and butter pickles shared by Mrs Staats and a nod to dairy-sourced chocolate milk as a hot weather lunch option.
