Leopold and Loeb Trial Opens With Psychiatric Debate
Chicago July 29. The Leopold and Loeb case opens into a clash of alienists as defense and prosecution seek to classify the youths as sane or morally deranged. Dr Healy and other experts test the boys’ intellectual and emotional status while state experts argue for ample punishment. The trial foregoes the word insanity as taboo and focuses on whether the defendants can be held legally responsible.
