A U S Marine spokesman said a private first class was killed by an accidental discharge from a companion’s .45 caliber weapon during an unauthorized visit near the Marine position in Lebanon. Four Marines were present. three are under investigation and have counsel.
Senator Mansfield proposes an early adjournment of Congress to allow President Eisenhower freer action before a planned United Nations Middle East summit. Debate continues in the Senate over Eisenhower's Lebanon troop decision and its constitutional implications.
A 12 year old boy, Donald Ray Morris of Middleport, died after a tractor pinned him on Nelson Road near Salem Center. The accident occurred around 1 05 p m as he headed toward Raymond Thomas home. Sheriff Hartenbach said the vehicle veered into a ditch and the boy’s neck was broken. Emergency squads arrived to find him dead. He was visiting his uncle Lester Thomas and is survived by parents, four brothers and two sisters. Funeral services set for Tuesday at Rawlings Coats funeral home. Burial in Middleport Hill Cemetery.
The British Embassy said the US Air Force began airlifting ammunition from Cyprus to Jordan Sunday night for British troops. A spokesman noted a dozen C119 Flying Boxcars were involved in the operation.
In St. Joseph Missouri Charles Chester Walker 34 drowned while teaching his 8 year old son Stephen to swim at Sugar Lake. The boy says his father pushed him toward shore and vanished underwater. Divers recovered Walker's body about an hour later seven feet down entangled in moss.
Welch of Carthage Missouri tried to extract oil protein and alcohol from hedge apples. Federal agents confiscated his alcohol and equipment and billed $111.53 in taxes. Rep. Brown pressed for a lawful distiller status as Welch recalls government warnings and bond demands.
Evansville police say a thief took an eight foot painting of Christ from the chapel at Camp Reveal on Sunday. The work valued at $500 to $1000 was left undisturbed by a neon sign that read He watches you every minute.
A Sollitt Construction Co cement truck veered off an embankment at the Philip Sporn plant injuring driver Cecil Kirby and two workers, John Ingels and Arthur Anderson. They were taken to Holzer Hospital in Gallipolis. Ingels was in the ER at 11:30 a.m. More details awaited on their conditions.
Police say Phillip B. Holmes 43 of Columbus will face murder charges in the slaying of Nancy Ewing 45. Holmes admitted firing the shot in front of an apartment house on Saturday night after Nancy Ewing and her husband Frank 49 reportedly threatened him with knives.

N E Sarg Veham, 84, of Marietta, a delegate to the Ohio Disabled American Veterans convention, is described as the oldest living Ohio World War I veteran. His service spans Spanish American War in 1898, Boxer Rebellion service, and World War I with the 134th Field Artillery Battalion in France where he later joined the DAV.
Space explorers Malcolm Ross and M Lee Lewis survived a 2000 foot bounce after a record balloon flight reaching 82000 feet. An attachment failure caused the balloon to detach, sending the gondola to a pasture in North Dakota before the descent could be completed. They logged 34 hours aloft as the first stratosphere TV images were transmitted to ground.
