In Korea the United Nations forces and Chinese and North Korean units started pulling back to form a two kilometer buffer zone as part of the armistice. The retreat aims to complete by 10 p.m. Thursday with island evacuations by Aug 5 and Panmunjom supervision beginning.
U S Navy headquarters stated five ships were sunk and 82 others hit during the Korean War with 337 Americans killed and 1585 wounded. It called the naval fighting a strange war as no major ship battles occurred far from land with surface ships engaging near the coastline. The sunken vessels were four minesweepers named Pledge Parridge Pirate and Magpie and one tug named Sarsi.
In Columbus psychologists study 15 year old Joseph Giffin and 13 year old George Giffin, brothers from Hocking County, who killed 60 year old Ivor Dawley with .22 caliber rifle bullets. They are observed at the Bureau of Juvenile Research to learn if rehabilitation is possible.
Maj John Eisenhower son of the President comments from Korea that the fighting has ceased but the task remains hard. He recalls his first anniversary in Korea dated July 27 1952. He has 37 points toward rotation and could be eligible to return August 1.
Boston Red Sox star outfielder Ted Williams was released from active Marine Corps duty today and he said he would probably be at Fenway Park tomorrow. The earlier story appeared on page 8.
The slaying of Ivor Dawley by two teenage brothers last Thursday near Carbon Hill reveals ironic details. The youths used a .22 rifle and lived in Dawley’s former relatives’ home, tied to Dawley’s past and to the area’s Dawley family history. Dawley had helped the boys by giving junk to sell and once aided them despite hardship, with about $30 reportedly earned from those sales. (Continued on Page 5).
Premier Alcide de Gasperi's eighth government fell at a no confidence vote in Rome. The 282 to 263 defeat ends his brief, post election administration as he must present his formal resignation to President Luigi Einaudi. The constitution demands confidence from both chambers.
In Columbus 21 people attended a widely publicized interdenominational prayer meeting at Trinity Episcopal Church to give thanks for the armistice in the Korean War. The Columbus Council of Churches sponsored the Monday night service.
A mother Barbara Thoren 45 and four children John 3 Elaine 8 Richard 11 Joyce 15 perished in a Worchester Massachusetts one story house fire. Father Chester Thoren and two other children escaped with injuries Judith 15 and Stephen 13 unharmed. จ
Governor Frank J. Lausche vetoed his ninth bill from the 100th General Assembly which would have shared 12 million dollars of motor vehicle license fees with cities counties and townships. He would sign a plan to distribute 12 million from 49 million anticipated from truck licenses and tax increases but the license distribution would come on top of 5.39 million already received by local governments under a reenacted bill increasing truck license fees.
The Agriculture Department reports farm income for the first half of this year fell 5 percent from a year earlier to 12.6009 billion dollars. Receipts from livestock and products declined 8 percent to 8.2 billion, while crop receipts held around 4.4 billion. June profits dropped 13 percent year over year, though overall production may still match 1952 records. Domestic demand remains strong but foreign demand is down, with some export gains in cotton tobacco and certain oils.
Gov. James F. Byrnes of South Carolina faces opposition from civil rights groups over his U N General Assembly nomination. NAACP secretary Walter White warns the move could be seen as US abandoning human rights. Byrnes pledges to maintain segregation while in office. The president also nominates Henry Cabot Lodge Jr Frances Bolton James P Richards and others as delegates with diverse backgrounds.
Allies and communists agreed to begin exchanging about 87 000 prisoners of war on August 5 at Panmunjom. The joint Military Armistice Commission launched exchange plans as five truce bodies met. The UN would deliver roughly 2 760 daily, including 360 sick and wounded. A buffer zone was created by retreating about 1 1/2 miles from the front. South Korea’s President Rhee voiced unity with UN forces if postwar talks fail. Swiss and Swedish delegates were en route to Panmunjom to join the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission. General Clark and Lt. Gen. Harrison returned to Tokyo after signing documents.
The second truck driver in three days was shot to death while sleeping on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near the Laurel Tunnel. Harry Franklin Pitts, 39, of Bowling Green, Virginia, was not robbed as a manhunt stretched along the turnpike.
James Persinger 34 formerly of Apple Grove was killed Monday night in a highway crash in Ohio where he was employed. The body will arrive home this evening. His wife and three children live on Sixth Street and his mother Mrs. Gertie Persinger resides nearby.
The government recertifies the Portsmouth Chillicothe section of Ohio as a critical defense housing area. Federal rent control will remain in effect until April 30 1954 or until adequate housing becomes available.
Columbus reports Russell Muskus, already twice convicted of the first degree murder of George J. LeMasters in Canton, has appealed the case to the Ohio Supreme Court today.
Washington voters report the House passed 209 to 163 on Monday authorizing a new investigation into tax exempt foundations. The move follows concerns about foundation activities and governance.
The Chicago Tribune reports the government declined to approve an agreement to spread $600000 from Truman memoirs over seven tax years. IRS counsel Davis says a new submission is needed while Eisenhower’s book used a 25 percent capital gains rate saving about $400000 on roughly $1 million in gross income.
The House Post Office Committee indefinitely shelved the administration's proposed postal rate increase. Chairman Rees cited Senate opposition and the rush to adjourn as reasons to halt further action this session. The Post Office Department faces a multibillion dollar annual deficit, and the White House sought a broad rate hike to reduce losses.
Dag Hammarskjold told the UN Economic and Social Council that the United States cannot bar aliens designated undesirable from United Nations headquarters in New York under the headquarters agreement. Rosendale New York dispatch reports a lake resort hotel fire killed four to five vacationers and injured nine others. A woman leaped from a second story bed room to die. three to four more bodies were found in the smoldering ruins of two levelled frames. Between nine hundred and one hundred guests slept in one building and twenty three in the other. a passing freight train alerted workers and guests to the blaze. First rough damage estimate tagged the loss at one million dollars.
A Sandusky area crash killed Orville Blair 40 and his wife Ann 26 and three children, Edward 5 Kathryn 3 and Barbara 2, when their car hit a truck south of Sandusky. Nancy 7 survived in very critical condition at Good Samaritan Hospital. Truck driver Charlies Allen Johnston 26 of New Castle Pa was hospitalized with cuts and shock. State police cited skull and multiple fractures as the cause of death.
The United States considers forming a UN delegation to Korea composed only of the 17 nations that fought the communists. Debate focuses on excluding neutrals and limiting the group to direct combatants as the August UN session weighs site, agenda, and composition for the peace conference. Secretary Dulles faces pressure to prevent being outvoted by minor contributors.
More than 100000 East Germans gathered in West Berlin to collect parcels from a U S backed relief program. Crowds began at dawn and grew rapidly with an expected total near 250000 by mid afternoon. The two week effort aims to aid over a million East Germans as Red propaganda reacts. Red border police allowed free passage back and forth across the border with the aid.
The U S Navy announced that American Navy and Marine pilots shot down 20 MIG 15 jet fighters during the Korean War without losing a plane. Most of the kills were by Panther jets from carriers with additional credit to ground support and supply destruction missions.
