Luke Sewell resigns today as manager of the Cincinnati Reds. He had led the club since Oct. 23, 1949. General manager Gabe Paul says Sewell agreed to stay on until a suitable replacement is found within 24 hours. Paul spoke by telephone from New York with Sewell at his side.
Mustapha El Nahas Pasha, head of the Wafd party, praises Maj. Gen. Mohammed Naguib Bey and his purge of bribery and corruption. Naguib, welcomed by Nahas at the air port, is called savior of the country as he takes command with Aly Maher Pasha as premier. The Wafd backs the new cabinet while warning against demonstrations and foreign interference.
Washington reports 15 000 CIO Steelworkers at Aluminum Co of America plants threaten to strike as talks collapse over wage and benefit demands. The union says no surprise element, and Goldberg notes a Tuesday deadline set after a two week warning to reach an agreement.

In Dallas AP summary Texas voters backed Gov. Allan Shivers for governor and Price Daniel for Senate in a Democratic primary. Shivers led Yarborough 672,459 to 395,802 with later counts 736,844 to 26,208 for Beckworth and 72,947 for Napier. Daniel edged Beckworth and Napier, while Daniel supported tideland ownership. Dies faced a runoff with John Lee Smith for congressman at large. Rayburn and Patman were renominated amid intra party clashes.
A Pan American Stratocruiser door blew open after takeoff from Rio de Janeiro, sucking American-born passenger Marie Elizabeth Westbrook Capello Capellaro from her seat into the Atlantic 12,000 feet below. The 27 mile out flight to Montevideo, Uruguay, left no sight of the woman.
