Former President Lyndon B. Johnson, following a major heart attack in April, was flown to Brooke General Hospital in San Antonio with chest pains. The Army hospital said he was comfortable and in excellent spirits, accompanied by wife Lady Bird.
In Toledo Ohio two men were found fatally wounded at a gasoline service station. Floyd Harris Jr. 33, the attendant, was shot once and died later after being found crawling toward the door. Roosevelt Love 32 was shot twice and died at the scene.
The House approved 50 million dollars for a stronger dam inspection program and quadrupled the federal highway disaster repair fund to 200 million for this year. The move follows recent East Coast and South Dakota floods and now goes to the Senate.
The Transportation Department reports 58,452 deaths in the past year, up 526 from 1970, with a sixth straight year of a falling death rate. Train and highway grade crossings fell, while other travel categories showed increases in fatalities.
