U S forces withdrew from Yongdong after fierce fighting as communists pressed along the Taejon Yongdong corridor. The retreat followed heavy enemy assaults with U S troops attempting to pull back to safer positions while air observers noted enemy movements surrounding the area.
The state liquor director charged Felix and Alfred Calabrese of Springfield with involvement in a fraud to obtain a night club permit for the Miracle Bar in Columbus. Mrs. Alvina Hessinger, sister of the Calabreses, allegedly misrepresented herself as sole administrator to gain a D-5 permit. The board may hold a hearing to suspend or revoke the license. Felix and Alfred denied the allegations saying Fleckner is biased and that Hessinger is the sole owner.
In St Clairsville the prosecuting attorney testified about the alleged confession by George Ernest Doty in the 18 year old Alma Montag slaying. Irwin quoted Doty saying he beat Montag with a tree limb after she resisted his advances.
In Cocoa Florida a second two stage guided missile test is planned for Saturday following a successful first flight yesterday. The 14 ton German V-2 rocket with a 700 pound nose warhead climbed over the Atlantic and achieved 2700 miles per hour.
The extended forecast for Columbus Ohio calls for temperatures averaging 3 to 5 degrees below normal, with normal highs around 80 and lows near 60. Precipitation expected around a half inch, with several showers after Wednesday as temperatures rise to normal by week’s end.
An estate sale ad features 10 acres of tillable land on a gravel road with electricity and telephone. The ad prompts calls to 25248 and notes the Messenger Want Ads produce results for buying, selling or renting. Mr Paul Brown says he can only answer the phone after seeing the ad.
President's water resources board heard a 10 state panel call for a national policy to stop industrial waste dumping in streams. Edward J. Cleary of the Ohio River Valley commission urged uniform standards and local balance with national needs. Co I. Weaver of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce pressed for government involvement only where national necessity is clear and projects are economically sound.
The Baptist World Congress issued a manifesto noting Christianity faces greater danger of losing its principles. Led by Dr. Stanley I. Stuber, the 19 member commission warns of rising state church interference and religious discrimination in various nations. It cites arrests of church officers and the persecution of Protestants and Catholics where authorities are hostile.
The House Un American Activities Committee received new material and new names in its Ohio inquiry. Rep Velde said Cecil Scott of Cincinnati supplied the evidence. Scott earlier joined the Communist Party years ago after consulting federal officials and arranging to act as an FBI informant on Cincinnati area communist activity.
Edwin A Todd aged 56, an assistant state treasurer, died yesterday in Detroit after illness. He had served in state government for many years and was known for his financial oversight. Funeral arrangements were not immediately announced.
A 24-year-old Ironton Ohio man in Huntington police court on intoxication charges said he is a fugitive from a Georgia road gang. William McJunkins said he escaped DeKalb County Georgia prison last January while serving a five to seven year burglary sentence for a Decatur cafe theft. He stated he fled to Ironton joined by his wife and child and worked for coal and lumber firms in the Ironton Ashland area.
The school board announced Fred B. Birchfield 54 is appointed Ironton High School principal. He previously led Logan High School until 1946 and has worked for the Veterans Administration. He succeeds M. H. Miller who resigned for an admin post in Delaware County schools.

The United Rubber Workers of America CIO leader L. S. Buckmaster urged a general wage increase for rubber and allied industries. He spoke to over 125 policy committee members as a two day conference opened in Columbus. A 15 member committee was set to draft a concrete wage program for submission today.
At Columbus the Fraternal Order of Police adopted a resolution calling for a 40 hour week for policemen in all departments statewide. Most departments still operate on a 48 hour schedule. About 140 delegates and 160 guests attended the annual banquet as the convention runs through Tuesday.
President Truman renominates Paul M. Herzog for a new five year term on the National Labor Relations Board. Herzog, chair since 1945, had requested relief in August.
Ohioans bought 44.19 million dollars in U S savings bonds during a two month drive. The sum topped the 39 million dollar quota by 13.8 percent as announced by the U S Savings Bond Division.
In Philadelphia a PR consultant wrote to the president of a large company asking for a list of the firm’s defense items if it isn’t too much trouble. Recently the consultant received a reply stamped with the note eh and a return of the letter.
Heavy frontal attacks by Korean War forces clash west of Yongdong along the Taejon Pusan highway. US forces hold but abandon some advances as Reds press from front and flanks. Civilians evacuated while Yongdong remains within American lines amid ongoing combat.
The Reds captured Haenam near the peninsula tip and advanced beyond the 38th parallel. Kwangju fell northeast of the city as Namwon railway junction was seized with Kurye and Mokpo earlier taken. Allied air forces backed ground troops as Maj. Gen. Partridge announced intensified night sorties and a new low level parachute bombing tactic to destroy bridges.
University of Illinois physicist Louis Ridenour suggests a radioactive dust weapon dubbed death sand. He notes its lightness and invisibility could contaminate large areas, with delayed symptoms and dire death risk for those exposed.
In Washington the push for an early tax increase gains momentum in Congress to fund the Korea war effort and broader emergency controls on credit. President Truman plans to request details Wednesday with forecasts of higher taxes and a total military budget near 23 billion. The plan includes 600000 more troops and expanded Air Force funding, with Army and Navy allocations also rising and a defense department activation line at 240 million.
East Germany's President Wilhelm Pieck and Prime Minister Otto Grotewohl were reelected co chairmen of the Socialist Unity Party for an indefinite term. The party, backed by the Soviet occupation army, dominates East German politics after a five day convention attended by international Communist leaders.
