Report details a fatal midnight collision where the steamer Columbia sank after being rammed by a schooner off the California coast. Rescue notes indicate lifeboat findings and discrepancies in passenger lists, with 249 lives jeopardized including crew and passengers.
A wind storm toppled a tree onto a curve near Armitage on the Hocking Valley line. The work train from Hocking and Sugar Creek halted in time, helped clear the obstruction, and arrived in the city about an hour late.
Eureka California July 23 the Mendocino coast horror lessens as 177 of 249 aboard the steamer Columbia survive the collision with the San Pedro near Shelter Cove. The Elder towed the San Pedro to Eureka with 107 passengers and 37 crew saved. Captain Doran perished with his ship while others recount its desperate final moments and lifeboat rescues.
Edward E. Butler his wife and two daughters Gertrude and Dorothy and other Portsmouth residents are believed drowned after the steamer Columbia disaster. Eli Rockwell and his wife Charles Martindale and wife and baby are also missing. Butler, head clerk in the Portsmouth post office and former newspaperman, was on an extended vacation with family.
Buchtel Ohio July 23 John Connelly a prominent labor official for the town died after being dragged by his driven team when frightened over rough ground. He died about three hours later. Connelly was married with three children and served as president of a local United Mine Workers union.
Miss Bessie Pidcock of Kachelmacher and William N. Fleck of Nelsonville married Sunday morning by Rev. Charles Kelley Jenness at the First M E Church parsonage. They plan to reside in Rachelmacher after leaving last night.
Waren Brothers of this city sue Raccoon Valley Coal Company in Common Pleas Court. They sold two ponies and a harness set for 370 dollars and delivered them May 29, 1907 at the new mine in Zaleski, Vinton County. They seek judgment plus interest from May 29, 1907. I M Foster represents the plaintiffs.
Chillicothe Ohio report notes B and O 8 W line killed three men in five days between the city and Greenfield. The latest victim is William Kinneman, 35, a C H and D section hand, killed near Mussleman’s Station last night. Some say marital troubles led to suicide.
Mrs. Daniel Vincent, about 35, was instantly slain by a bolt while standing in a farmhouse doorway watching a storm near Amesville Ohio. Her 15 year old daughter was struck unconscious but recovered. three other children were in the room. The house sustained only torn wallpaper as evidence of the strike.
Captain J. B. Allen reports from Philadelphia on the Grand Lodge event and the monster parade. He notes extreme heat with 100 degree shade, 75 000 bikes, 250 000 spectators, and a $260 000 decoration budget including a Broadway Court of Honor illuminated arches and fairyland displays.
Squire Rose held a busy session on South Court street with two cases disposed. Fred Kinh, arrested at the B&O depot, paid $5.40 after a riding-while-stealing charge. Ed Sharp of Carbondale faced charges of selling liquor to a minor and on Sunday and pleaded guilty, with a Friday hearing set. The Blue Goose saloon figures again as a source of recent trouble in Carbondale. W. C. Pidcock swore out affidavits leading to Sharp’s arrest.
The Athens ball team ends the season after failed efforts to schedule games with Jackson today and tomorrow. Heath and Hagan leave for Adena, while Gullum continues the season with Jackson as last year.
Dr F P McVay of Athens was called to Guysville Ohio on Monday due to a severe neuralgia attack afflicting Mr A N Sanders.
Four months old child of Mr and Mrs John Popovick died at their home in Hocking at 2 PM Monday. Funeral services were held at St Pauls Church this morning at 9 oclock.
Nelsonville Ohio currency officials announced no bids were received for the 12,500 four percent seven year average improvement bonds on July 22. The city planned to fund public works but the offering drew no interested investors.
