Washington AP reports House leaders push for quick action on higher postal rates to ease a post office deficit. The plan includes a penny stamp increase for first class and air mail and a total 240 million dollars yearly rise. Committee hearings continue amid protest from affected businesses.
Two brothers aged 15 and 13 were detained in Hocking County after the New Straitville oil-field worker Ivor Dawley, 54, was shot while pumping near Carbon Hill. Investigators say the youths robbed his billfold and stole his 1949 auto en route to Lancaster before a crash halted their flight.
Korean sources report Kim Il Sung purging Korean communists leaning toward Russia. Three cabinet members were said purged including Foreign Minister Park Hun Yung, Justice Minister Lee Sung Yup, and Vice Premier Hu Ka Wee. Park was jailed three months ago. details on the others remain unclear.
An Ashtabula Ohio gas explosion left Etias Beebe 52 and his wife Marine in critical condition at General Hospital. Neighbors pulled Mrs Beebe from a burning window as the two story frame house filled with fumes after a road grader severed a gas line.

The panel would report by January 15 and if it recommends higher pay Congress could implement the new scale without more legislation. Current pay is 15000 dollars annually.
Joseph E. Moody, president of the Southern Coal Producers Assn, says South mine owners face squeeze from the miners union and steel industry. He calls any new pay rise for coal miners economic insanity and warns higher labor costs could force closures or shift to non union operations.
