Terre Haute workers return to jobs as labor unions end the two day general strike. Streetcars and buses resume service while fuel and food shortages ease in nearby towns. Officials advise mediators can handle negotiations and most sympathy strikers resume duties.
A new college aid setup at Ohio University is announced by President Dr. James. Advisors will guide entering students through the selection and direction of work, with general advisors replacing narrow faculty roles. The plan aims to improve student aid and align with higher college objectives.
In Three Forks Montana Ellen Weaver eight required emergency aid after a rattlesnake bite. A team of ranch horses pulled a motorist to transport her to a doctor while a turkey poultice was applied to the bitten hand providing crucial relief before medical treatment.
In Berlin the Baden state government moves to dissolve the Deutsche Jugendkraft for political Catholicism and confiscate its property. Indoor sports are banned for the first time in the campaign against Catholic youth groups as former service members’ bands are also dissolved. Jews continue to bear the brunt of the Nazi drive.
IRONTON. Willard Hamlin age 50 surrendered and was charged with first degree murder in the slaying of Marshall Wilbur Bias age 49 of Proctorville. Deputies said Bias was shot while breaking up a drinking bout on a road near Proctorville. He fled across the Ohio River into West Virginia then returned to the Ohio side.
Contending the Internal Revenue Department wrongfully assessed 11654.76 dollars against the firm in 1930, the New Pittsburg Coal Co. of Cincinnati filed suit in Federal Court seeking recovery of the sum.
In Cleveland and Celina, nearly 100 pickets gathered at the Industrial Rayon Corporation plant. Judge Walter McMahon had ordered the injunction and contempt charges were cited for James P. McSweeney and 48 others. Five minor injuries and five arrests followed a clash as workers entered the premises.
A robber exposed by a grimy pocket heist walked away with Rene Pomrening’s purse containing 483 dollars after reaching into the victim’s trouser pocket. Pomrening’s female companion fled ahead as the thief departed, joking about the act.
William J. Harahan is re elected Tuesday as president of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad and chosen to head the Pere Marquette Railroad as well. Harahan previously led C and O from 1920 to 1929 and has long been a senior executive with the lines.
The Joint Taxation Committee in Columbus considers creating an Ohio relief corporation with broad powers to supervise relief and issue bans on anticipated revenue as the WPA peaks. J Barrick of the Ohio League of Municipalities says the plan, submitted after talks with research bureaus, could oversee relief after thousands are removed from government rolls. About 35 million dollars may be needed for 1925 1930 relief, with 260 000 unemployables on relief in Ohio according to a March survey.
The report notes Governor Harry W. Nice of Maryland flays expenditures and assaults on the Federal constitution, confers with Herbert Hoover and other GOP leaders, indicating Nice as a potential Republican presidential timber.
Investigators examined protest letters from Ohio and Western Pennsylvania cities against the utility holding company bill. A circular says these pre military soldiers are under military jurisdiction and penalties. General Grazole estimates 0.000 youths are in preliminary training. The Italian Press shifts from attacks on Japan to defending currency strength after the gold coverage suspension.
Delaware police say 19 year old Kenneth Thomes of Stockdale farm was found dead in a fully clothed state in a quarry pit after witnesses reported he parked near the site and ran toward the pit. A farmer checked the area shortly after but found no trace.
Witmer Atson of Austin Texas defeated Heiner Henke of Germany in straight sets at Wimbledon to knock Germany out of the Davis Cup and advance the United States to a challenge round against Great Britain starting Saturday. Scores were 6 1 7 5 11 9.
In Columbus a 19 month old child Bernadet4 Knall was killed after being struck by a car Tuesday night while playing in the street in front of her home. The driver remained at the scene and police are handling the investigation.
The body of John Owens of Syracuse was found at 11 o'clock this morning hanging from a locust tree on the Ohio River bank near Syracuse. Four Syracuse youths and Meigs County Boy Scouts helped in the search. Owens had recently bought a rope and had been in poor health. He is survived by his mother Elizabeth, son Norman, brother James and sisters Leah Malone and Rose Capehart. Coroner Henry Ewing is handling the case.
About five hundred officials and civic leaders from 11 northern Ohio counties urged that motor vehicle license and liquid fuel tax revenues be used only for highway construction and improvement. They met with the Ohio Survey Committee and opposed diverting highway funds to other uses and the Highway Department’s control over roads.
Billy Burke the 1931 national open champion posted a 32 three under par on the outgoing nine to tie Ted Luther at the end of 45 holes at Inverness Golf Club Ledo. Luther had built a six stroke edge earlier and needed 38 for the nine while Jack Thompson of Youngstown added a 35 in the same group.
C. C. Stillman federal relief administrator for Ohio announced expenditure cuts totaling 191 567 dollars in June. He said Ohio spent 9 396 001 dollars in May with 3 584 129 dollars going to direct relief for 249 042 families and 65 667 single persons.
Ohio awaits a Washington signal for 50,000 jobless to enter 14 percent WPA programs. If President Roosevelt approves Ohio requests for 10.0 million dollars in federal funds, 1,400 projects would begin using 240 thousand local dollars. WPA officials expect starts within days after approval.

In St Paul a man, Charles Bb Stock, fainted after news of the birth of his son today. Police and hospital staff treated him. his wife and the newborn were later reported well.
Carlton Dar gusch of the State Tax Commission warned that adopting a millage based sales tax would lower revenue. Morgenthau proposed minting one and five mill coins to aid collection, while Ohio merchants oppose and push Congress to back the plan. The current law taxes 1 to 3 cents per sale, and a five cent minimum could offset lost income.
