High Prices For Small Fruits Expected To Last Years

Horticulturist W J Green of the Ohio Experiment Station says small fruit prices will stay high for several years due to unusual demand and labor scarcity. He cites mass fruit purchases for ice cream, shrinking acreage, and limited grower output as key factors. He notes that many farmers raise little beyond personal use, leaving the public dependent on small fruit gardeners. Prices have roughly quadrupled over a decade, while acreage cannot expand rapidly. Those with small land tracts could grow cheaper high quality fruit for themselves rather than buy it.
