Fire sweeps 12th floor of Howard Johnsons motel

Six people died in aNew Orleans Howard Johnsons Downtown motel blaze officials said. The fire confined to the 12th floor prompted 450 plus evacuees and left two others critically injured. A security guard aiding guests died and a survivor described escaping via a balcony and interior fire escape.

Living Costs Jump as CPI Rises in June

The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a 0.6 percent June rise in the Consumer Price Index the largest in 15 months led by grocery prices up 0.9 percent. Transportation housing and medical costs also climbed while earnings averaged 127.57 dollars per week for about 45 million workers, preserving 0.7 percent purchasing power after taxes and inflation.

Judge John W. Bolin resigns as Common Pleas Court Judge of Athens County effective August 31. At 69, he cited age and a long career 44 years in law and on the bench. California court strips abortion hospital approval rule

A state appeals court ruled that all abortions in California are legal if performed by a licensed physician in a licensed hospital.
