The House voted 239 to 170 to kill the Brannan farm subsidy trial run on eggs, potatoes and wool while 383 to 24 extended wartime price supports at 90 percent parity. Senate leaders, including Sen. Elmer Thomas, weigh next steps amid possible deadlock and political timing.
Moscow radio condemned a Vatican excommunication decree against Communists as a contribution to the cold war. The English broadcast called it a tool of Anglo American reactionaries and said it would fail to split the united front of peace supporters.
Washington dispatch reports federal housing expediter Tighe E. Woods ordered removal of rent control from sleeping rooms in Columbus and Franklin County Ohio. The move follows a survey indicating rooming houses meet demand for quarters reasonably.

New York Cardinal Spellman denounces Mrs Franklin D. Roosevelt for opposing federal funding of parochial and private schools in a strong public rebuke.
The Messenger adds a new special race for boys aged 12 to 17 not employed as Messenger newspaper boys. The event, separate from the scholarship race, will take place in Athens Logan Pomeroy Gallipolis and Point Pleasant with $3 prize money for each city winner. Elimination race at Athens County Fairgrounds shifts from 2 p.m. to 1 p.m. on August 7 to accommodate many entries.
A 26 year old Air Force officer James McFarlane of Wright Patterson Field Dayton was found beaten and stuffed in the trunk of his car after offering a ride to two youths. He was taken to the Air Force base hospital in Dayton with head injuries and facial bruising. An 18 year old Patrick Johnson of Dayton was detained for questioning after authorities chased the suspects from Germantown to Hamilton.
The Ohio Air National Guard, about 2300 personnel, completed a four day field training at Dover Air Force Base. Operation 300 simulated an aggressor invasion from Iceland to the U S with lines from the Atlantic coast to Cleveland and Parkersburg Maryland to Philadelphia. The 55th Fighter Wing under Brigadier General E H Zistel conducted air sorties against the imagined foe.
Federal District Court approves first of more than 40 theater sales by Schine Chain Theaters Inc under a June 25 order. Moose Theater in Norwalk Ohio sold to Elmer of Cleveland for $8000. Schine to dispose of theaters in over 39 communities as Justice Department seeks monopoly breakup.
Gov. Frank J. Lausche refused to halt the execution of James C. Osinski a Toledo man convicted of killing his wife Loretta and her parents Raymond and Louise Ditmyer in a 1947 attack. Osinski 40 was to die in the electric chair that night leaving two children.
Jerry Burden 11 died after being found in the YMCA pool hours after a hike with 45 youths. Acting Coroner R G Hendershot said the boy was cooling off with the group when the tragedy occurred.
Los Angeles deputies search for a mystery blonde linked to an assassination attempt on Mickey Cohen after a shooting near Sherry's Restaurant on Sunset Strip. Vaale reported a 1949 sedan fled with two men inside and a third on the sidewalk, a woman shouted “let's get out of here.” Cohen associate Harry Cooper and Ned Herbert were wounded critically yet improving. Dee David also injured. Two shotguns found nearby.
Gov. Frank J. Lausche signed five major bills including a 2 million dollar appropriation for local governments as Ohio's share of a poor relief fund deficit for the first half of 1949. Other measures revise poor relief law pay medical and hospital bills for blind pensioners grant sick leave to teachers and broaden welfare director powers. The $2 million law took effect as an emergency measure. other laws take effect in 90 days.
The KLM crash victims ashes will be flown to The Hague from Bombay and urns including 13 American journalists will lie on a bier in a candle lit chapel. The Dutch Federation of Journalists will guard the urns during a brief ceremony.
The State Board of Liquor Control suspended licenses of eight permit holders for alleged liquor law violations. Names and licenses include Amsy Fred Pritts at Vinton Cafe Nelsonville Route 1 beer wine whisky by the glass Sunday sales for 45 days.
On Thursday night the city council was petitioned by police officers firemen and cemetery workers for a 25 monthly wage increase and a 75 yearly clothing allowance.
Two men died from burns after a spectacular explosion and fire at the Esso Standard Oil refinery in Baltimore. Thirty four others were injured as two distillation units blew, threatening nearby tanks. Firefighters saved 48 gasoline tanks while 300 plus firefighters battled the blaze. Charles Schepling aged 39 and William Emerick 49 died in separate hospitals.
Newcomerstown reports a 65 year old janitor Andrew Covic charged with first degree murder in the slaying of his estranged wife and shooting his daughter Katherine Corbett 28 during an argument at her home. He wept when granted permission to view the body and the wife will be buried today.
Ohio Senator Bricker votes for the pact while Taft votes against. Both support reservations to limit military aid and atomic bomb obligations, with the Senate sustaining a defeat on key amendments.
Senate investigating labor union practices will hear coal industry officials first as the committee probes labor and management in the coal sector. Senator Robertson says the inquiry may consider legislation to curb labor monopolies if evidence supports it.

Striking dockers who crippled the port of London for 25 days voted to return to work on Monday ending a major disruption. The vote brings an end to the stoppage that affected shipments and port operations across the capital.
The Senate ratified the Atlantic Pact by 82 to 13. The White House will send Congress a foreign military aid program totaling 1.45 billion dollars, with 1.19 billion for North Atlantic Treaty associates. The measure aims to authorize and appropriate funds while avoiding atomic weapon obligations.
Ohio pays final tribute to Private Rodger Young with a funeral at the Methodist Church in Clyde. Governor Lausche and war hero tales accompany the service as Chaplain Wareing conducts the last rites for the Medal of Honor recipient. His flag draped coffin will join memorials beside Civil War General McPherson and Spanish American War serviceman Meeks at McPherson Cemetery.
