STRATTON Colo July 18 Daring crash of west bound Rock Island passenger train toppled from a storm undermined bridge into Spring Creek. Fourteen dead and many injured as the sleeper car derailed into the creek near Colorado Springs. The engine and first two cars cleared the fall. seven passengers and a porter aboard the crashed coach were feared drowned. Bodies were brought to Limon for identification.
Martins Ferry July 18 A U P report says by September a channel not less than 300 feet wide should run the entire 964 miles of the Ohio River from Wheeling to Huntington. Dredging continues to widen bars toward a three hundred plus feet and twelve foot depth. Tonnage on the river rose in 1928 to about 21.94 million tons, up 4 percent from 1927, driven by iron coal petroleum products and packet freight.
Washington reports the Federal Farm Board said it cannot give definite consideration to loan applications at this time. The agency cited unspecified factors delaying detailed assessment and sounded cautious about new lending commitments.

Nassau County coroner Wilmot Y. Halleck ruled no intoxication evidence against Wilmer Stultz, the trans Atlantic aviator killed in the Roosevelt Field crash, rebutting earlier toxicologist Gettler’s report.
